The engine in my Boxster is toast. A second hand engine looks to be cheaper than a rebuild, but what is involved with swapping the engine out of a crashed 997S instead of another 987S?

Sorry ...but how do you know the engine is toast?

"Hmmm, that sounds odd"
*smoke*
"Oh"

More or less what happened... :o

It happened a couple of weeks ago, apparently spark plugs are crushed & a whole heap of other expensive oily stuff I don't understand... :(

Specialist Cars of Malton & Revolution both said I could only swap like for like (M96.26 apparently), but Google suggests it has been done.

I don't have the disposable income I once had, which gives me plenty of time to establish if swapping in a different engine would cost me four or five figures extra than I'm already looking at...

Like for like with a secondhand engine would be cheapest, but the 3.8 would be full of win!

It's just getting a handle on the realistic possibility / cost involved.

I don't know what 997S engines go for, or what else if anything is required.

If the total cost is going to be five figures then I'm not interested, but if it'd be under that then it'd be worth considering as it's going to cost thousands to replace like for like anyway...

A brand new short engine from Porsche is £2700 + VAT. No idea how much the labour is to fit it, but it will be comfortably under 5 figures.

Where've you seen that?

I don't really understand what bits are in the bottom end & what aren't, & there was speculation that the damage might not be limited to the bottom end.

Does a 997S bottom end fit my top end? Does that equal 3.8?

The ims is bottom end, its this bearing (picture from when I was rebuilding my 911's engine):

It sits underneath the RMS

When the bearing fails all manor of things go wrong but the top end is normally salvageable.

The 3.8 litre and 3.4 litre heads have slightly different bolt patterns as demonstrated in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9c-Xt-tiFU so you would need to modify almost everything when it goes back together. To be honest any changes in capacity will end up costing you a fortune as you will constantly end up having to engineer ways around things that don't fit.
