I have a PC I bought back in 2007 from here which I am trying to repurpose as a Minecraft computer for my friends daughter. I would like some advise if this is worth while Vs buying something new.

This computer was a beast in its day.

GeIL 4GB (4x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency Dual Channel
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) -
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
BFG 800W UK/PFC Approved PSU £114.99 1 £114.99
EVGA nForce 680i SLi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (122-CK-NF68-A1)

Thanks for the advise if this computer wont hack it please suggest either an upgrade or a new system.

Cool, Thanks.

It currently runs like a dog but maybe its the old hard disk. I may just get an SSD for it and reinstall the OS then.

Assume thats all it can be at that spec?

Thanks again

In acme's chair.
Are we talking about minecraft settings?

Make sure the performance mode (I believe it is called that?) is set to "Maximum FPS"

You might also want to try enabling and disabling/tweaking things to see what difference they make. The one I'd look at in particular is the view distance.

Thanks all.

I will have a look at the settings and think I will pickup a SSD unless I get one to review ;)

Resurrecting this post as I now have another issue. The 8800 GTX has just died and I have a daughter that needs her Minecraft fix. What could I get to replace it in the current market?

Thanks

Have you got a budget in mind?

This is a fantastic little card -

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £98.99
(includes shipping: £0.00)

I've got one in my daughter's PC and it'll even run things like run Tomb Raider on medium/high pretty well :)

Depends if you are using basic minecraft yes but if you start adding mods to it or run a pack well my wife has a mod pack with 170 different enhancements and it pushes her pc more than a AAA title her pc is a 4790k 970gtx 16mb system.

Thanks all really good advice, I am just looking over the cards now. I had looked at the 750 TI as it seemed a good price point. I will also look at the other suggestions. I tend to push my old rigs down the line to my Wife then to the kids PC so this is 3rd in the queue so it is a little staved until Pascal comes out ;)

If you were speccing up a minecraft\lego\wow box from scratch just tower, what would it be. Guessing if I needed to budget it would say ~£400.

Thanks

Ok well I knew this was coming! So the motherboard on this box is now gone..

So I am just going to do what I should have done, Daughters birthday in March so going to just buy her a new system. She plays lego games, minecraft and could do some steam streaming of better games.

Just need motherboard, cpu, ram and gpu. Lets say £400-£500?

Thanks once again..

How does this look?

Intel H110 Motherboard
500W Bronze Rated PSU
Processor Intel Core i3-6320 3.90GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail
Case BitFenix Prodigy M MATX Cube Case - Red
Memory Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C10 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX318C10FBK2/8)
Graphics Card MSI GeForce GTX 950 Gaming 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Seagate 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache HDD - OEM (ST1000DM003)

This is just taken from a pre config one but can either go with this or buy better\different parts and build it.

This comes in at £500 on the dot with OCUK building it.

Any comments welcome.

Thanks

I'd repost your final post as a spec check thread - not likely to get the usual attention if it's hidden at the bottom of here! It also really helps to use the OCUK shop's basket, which you can then embed into you forum post and allows viewers to just click the link to check out the item, rather than copy + paste + search each thing
