This comes from a friend of mine, I have no reason to doubt him but his partner works as an IT Tech for a rather luxurious holiday company, no idea who, but from what he was telling me, their cheapest holiday package was around the £10k mark.

Now his partner won the "Employee of the month" type award and was offered the following...a private boat party on one of the companies private yachts, she would be flown out to Boston with a +1 at the companies expensive for her to celebrate the achievement.

She really didn't like the idea and settled on a Mac Mini instead.

Yep, and its always the same group of brown nosers that get the award

We have this Excellence Award which is given yearly to employees that go above and beyond their specified roles - you get about £800 for it.

I won it last year, because I worked my ass off. I don't brown nose at all, in fact the amount of arguments I have with my superiors on a weekly basis is pretty crazy - the running joke in my office is 'how have I not been fired yet'

I don't pretend to be anyone's friend, and I believe that's very apparent in my workplace, but my work over the last 6 years has spoken for itself with great results - working hard/showing initiative is definitely rewarded irrespective of 'who you know.'

We have a quarterly awards dinner, where they pick Newcomer/Associate/Team Leader/Manager of the quarter, and a final dinner/massive **** up at the end of the year to determine Newcomer/Associate/Team Leader/Manager of the year.

£60 bonus for the quarter
£300 odd for the year

My work place run employee of the month. We all get the chance to nominate someone and the person with the most nominations wins £300 in a voucher of their choice.

You then automatically get nominated for employee of the year which is announced at the Xmas party.

You sound very bitter.

I won it because I worked my balls off on a project. My job is to deliver a solution quickly and effectively, I did it better than anyone expected with minimal resources and within a time frame that the stakeholder did not actually expect to achieve. The work I produced is now used globally in the company which is way outside it's original brief of supporting a small team.

The fact that I'm not a massive douche in the office helped, and if being likeable, accommodating and good at my job makes me a brown noser then I'm more than happy to be one :)

There is no employee of the month at my work (engineering), but we get very nice annual bonus' depending on how profitable our projects are during the financial year (including group profitability), effort put in to work, working extra hours to get the job done, etc....

You may not have meant it to sound that way, but that does make you sound like a douche :p ;) :D
We don't have one, we just get a performance bonus every month that's company wide...they like to think it makes up for the crap salaries....it doesn't!

that's how it should work if employers are going to do stuff like this... well perhaps not the boat party and free flights, though those are likely going to be less expensive to arrange for a specialist travel firm. But an actual prize, like a mac mini or just a cash bonus so you're actually rewarded for your efforts - without that the award is just cheap and patronising
