I'm currently running an old X2 550BE (unlocked to use 4 cores) with a Radeon HD7850.

It's time to upgrade CPU, motherboard, CPU cooler and Ram but I'm well out of the loop and could do with some help with the new spec.

The main reason for the upgrade is to run iracing better as it's showing signs of being CPU limited.

Budget is flexible, but £3-400 is the ballpark I'd prefer it to fall into. I don't need the ultimate, just something that'll last me the next 3-4 years and gives the best bang for my buck.

Micro atx is preferable. I'll overclock if it can be done quickly and without compromising stability.
I am keen to keep the PC relatively quiet so I'm happy to spend on a decent cooler.

I'll be reusing case, Samsung ssd, 430w antec PSU and the HD7850 for the moment. They will probably get upgraded next year.

Thanks for any help.

What case does it have to go in. Just wondering about how much clearance there is for the cpu cooler. Do you want a air cooler or AIO water cooler? In the meantime how does this look?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM £179.99
1 x Asus Z97M-Plus Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £107.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Savage Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11SRK2/8) £38.99
Total : £336.56 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

I just cannot recommend Skylake as the i5 6600k at £230 is a disgusting price. It's barely any better than the 4690k anyway. Your psu is going to need replacing fairly soon. Depending on which model you have it's only got 360w or 384w on the 12v rail.

Thanks for the help.

The case has loads if clearance - I'm currently using a scythe ninja (I should find out if I can reuse it)

The PSU has 384W on the 12v. The 7850 isn't particularly power hungry and as I understand the CPU shouldn't really use more power than my old one. Is there any other reason the PSU might be problematic?

If you are going to overclock then you need a psu with more headroom. 384w from a budget psu just is not going to cut it. Overclocking the cpu can force it alone to draw 150-200w. I have seen plenty of reviews of the 7850 that show total system power draw to be well over 300w as well.
