Pretty much never until recently, bought my 7 year old daughter an iPad from Walmart for Christmas and bought 2 year accidental damage package etc for it for $45, i read the small print thoroughly to make sure it would work - better than replacing it if it gets damaged.

Bought a cheap hammer drill from Argos once. They asked if I wanted product protection which was more than what the drill cost for 2 years. I LOL'd considering they already give you a 1 year guarantee with it.

I see it as gambling

You are betting that your iron will break within 5 years. But the bookmaker always has the edge.

yup

that is how insurance works in general - it is usually a -EV bet for the person buying the insurance... which is why insurance companies can exist and make profits in the first place

I don't think I've ever bought an extended warranty. The way I see it, over my lifetime I'm more likely to save money by replacing/ repairing products that do break rather than buying extended warranties for them in first place.
