can someone help me spec a machine that would meet the following criteria pls?

i have a 3570K (stock) running alongside 16GB RAM atm and looking at a new machine with 32GB RAM (i break 16GB usage so the more the merrier. 24GB might do realistically but looking at keeping for a while).

will be used for HEVC media encoding, some image work, gaming (ATi/AMD card) and a HCPC.

maybe a Intel i7 5820K? 6 core iirc? not too expensive but needs DDR4 i think.

no monitors etc needed, have a 60" TV and a 30" monitor it will connect to (will be buying a 4k TV at some point so GPU will need appropriate connectors. dual link DVI for 30" monitor, HDMI for TV and i assume display port for 4k TV for 60hz 4k).

drives, i currently have intel and samsung SSDs and plan one for OS and another for images (currently on a platter drive and min transfer rates makes it painful at times working through 100,000s of images). a 250GB for OS and game of the time, with a 500GB SSD for other stuff. i have all the mech drives i need.

GPU, prefer AMD and no need for the top end as won't be gaming on 4k, just 1080p at 60hz. current card is a 6950 bios flashed to a 6970 so assume a step above mid range would do?

i have a load of media drives connected externally now (storage only) so only need a mobo with 6 sata ports max. might be able to make do with 4.

cost for 2 SSDs, cpu, mobo, ram, gpu and a cheapish case. should be doable for a grand or less? budget is flexible.

thanks for any advice :)

good call, keeping current PC so one of those needed. ta :)

will have a look at links. am i right in thinking a 6core cpu would be best or would a higher clocked quad be better? i imagine for games that are made with single/dual core in mind the 6 cores single core perf would be enough no?

You will not find a 5820k lacking that's for sure, plus a few increases of the multiplier or turbo ratios and you could be running upto 4Ghz as long as the cooler does its job.

haven't overclocked since the Q6600 days but might have a look at the OCUK pre OCd systems. 6x4Ghz cores would be nice. off to see if the 5820k is in one of those systems

might msg OCUK in the CS forum to see if they'll build in the next month or so (waiting on transfer).

in meantime, i might have been hasty on GP (old dislikes coming through). would an nvidia card be a better choice?

the only other change is the 2nd drive to either a 940GB crucial ssd or the 1tb samsung

ok, got the money now so looking into this more.

Gigabyte X99-SLI - Intel Core i7 5820K Six Core CPU & Motherboard Bundle ***£30 Saving*** £479.98 *
1x Crucial BX200 480GB SSD SATA 6Gbps Solid State Drive (CT480BX200SSD1) £99.95 *
1x Aerocool X-Predator 750W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply £69.95 *
1x Alpenföhn Brocken ECO CPU Cooler - 120 mm £24.95 *
1x XFX Radeon R9 390X "DD Black Edition" 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (R9-390X-8DB6) £319.99 *
1x Avexir Core White Series 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit (AVD4UZ124001608G-4 £149.99 *
1x Antec P100 Mid Tower Silenced Computing Case £62.95 *

so £1208 or so

i did look at throwing in 64GB of RAM but decided against as i assume i can just throw another 32GB in a year or 2 when i want.

i didn't realise the mobo has 10 sata ports so might put some more drives internally and upped the PSU a tad as 550w just felt too low.

in the meantime i've bought myself a TB SSD i'm using on the current PC but i'll put it in this build so just need the crucial for now as on OS drive.

i'll wait till monday to order and just want to double check if this looks ok.

side note - messaged OCUK in the cust forum a week ago about possibility of building but never got a reply :(

ta all :)

Hi,

It looks ok apart from the PSU, I would stick to EVGA GS/G2 models or Superflower Leadex/Golden Green or Antec even Corsair first.

550=650W is going to be plenty for a single GFX card, 850w+ if you want Crossfire.
