My car has recently started to be slow at starting. By this I mean when I turn the key the first couple of times the engine turns over on the starter motor are slow, but the rest are normal speed and the engine starts after a normal amount of time (a couple of seconds). This slowness also seems to be getting worse so I want to fix it before it fails to start. it still does it when the engine is hot. Today it really struggled and the engine light flickered on /off with each slow turn and it did about three.

It's an e46 330ci. Do I need a new starter motor?

Interesting turn of events- I'm now broken down in a halfords car park! Turns out it wasn't the battery after all. New battery and when I turn the key the engine barely turns twice. Now no engine turning at all :( luckily the halfords has a garage so there's a silver lining...

very odd, presumably the battery has 13v ish.
starter motor bushes could be bad, but normaly it wont turn at all if they are. give the start a hit with a hammer to un seize it get it goign some times.

only things that effect starting at
Battery > Startmotor > flywheel or way over filled engine oil
