It's a bit frustrating that they chose powerful politicians to "show off" this new development, as if to say "yeah, look what can happen now...".

If this was solely a research development then there was no need to do that, the demo actors would have sufficed perfectly fine.

In here and out there.
I reckon this is the kind of technology that Bush Jr and Putin actually wanted out there in the world for it to be understood by the everyday person, that way if a situation does occur where someone has their video changed then it wouldn't be so difficult to check for such things.

Why has no-one thought of the Whitman, Price And Haddud quote for this one yet?

I'd guess part of the reason they're using well known politicans is because that effectively rules out any suggestion that they've basically arranged for the actors to match their facial expressions.
And of course, who hasn't wanted to make a video of GW Bush going "Oook!" and making monkey facial expressions.

It's quite impressive, although it does obviously build on existing technology (there have been applications do to it for things like skype avatars), but impressive to see it applied in real time to images of real people..

It is quite impressive.
You could make a nice video showing a politician accepting a bribe now, and he doesn't even have to be present :D

While impressive it is a long way from standing upto forensic scrutiny at any reasonable detail level - the mouth lines/geometry around the mouth at times is obviously wrong, angles on the eye details off a little with the angle of the head as well.

Yeah but take some little known guy, get a grainy camera so the quality isn't great, frame him in some drugs or child porn situation, and watch the career be ruined spectacularly.
Even better in some jumped up nation that normally doesn't need much actual evidence, now they will have concrete proof.

That's pretty mental. When I initially loaded the video up I just thought the actor had trained himself to re-enact George Bush's facial expressions from the source video. I'd be scared of technology like this being used to fraudulently make it seem like people have said things they haven't.
