I have a HP Gen8 micro server which I want to speed up and improve.

I have installed windows 10 and added corsair 120gt SSD and doubled the ram.

I have 2x 3tb hdds running in raid.

But the display graphic are poor and can run any movies off it (just too check)

and it seam really slow.

Im also considering doubling my storage also but im not sure how i would do it, I dont want to loose my stored files.

The problem with these is the CPU. I've got one of the earlier ones and I was using it as a HTPC but it's just not up to the job.

So i've relegated it to a backup server and just built myself a brand new HTPC to replace it.

Yes some Xeons can go in the Gen8. I forget which ones but it's the low TDP ones.

I've personally got an i3 2120 that I had laying around in my Gen8. I wasn't sure how reliable it'd be since the G1610T it came with (if I remember rightly) was only a 35w chip and the i3 2120 is a 65w chip, but it's been absolutely fine for over a year of 24/7 operation now - even under load. Temps are fine and it's never given me any stability issues at all.

The i3 2120 is dual core, 3MB cache and 3.3GHz with HyperThreading so it's a decent boost over the G1610T's 2MB cache and 2.2GHz without HyperThreading. Can probably find one for £20-30 these days too.
