So , I've been offered an Inno3d GTX 980 Ti Hercules (6GB) by a friend for £200...

I'm currently running an i7 2600k @4.6ghz with a Sapphire r9 280x Vapor X (3GB)

My question is, is it worth the upgrade for the money, and will my CPU bottle neck the card in any way ? as I've had the CPU for quite a few years now.

A quick check on a few comparisson sites show the 980 will get almost double the frame rate of the R9 280, but will it be noticeable ?

I like to max everything out at 1080p for games like GTA5, WOT and Witcher 3 and 4k could be a possibility in the near future.

Would the 980 give me better textures and effects or should I just stick with my 280 until my next full upgrade ?

980Ti is a good upgrade for £200 (normally used prices are £280-£320). Once you sell your 280X, it would be an even better deal :) Your CPU would be fine with the 980Ti.

With the r9 280's being roughly 7950 performance, i can honestly sya going from a CF7950 to a single 980Ti I felt justified.

Whip that arm off and sell your r9 280 to make the price hike even less.

Seeing as back in the day a 7950 was around 660 Ti performance, and with a 280 being around 7950 performance, I compared my 980 Ti at 1450mhz to my twins 660 Ti and it was around 3.5-4 times faster. you'll get at least 3 times the performance if you get an average clock on it of around 1375-1400mhz :)

I went from 280x to a 1060 and the difference was pretty substantial. The 980 ti is much better than the 1060 in terms of performance so you should see a huge gain! :)

Well guys, I installed my new card yesterday evening and I couldn't be happier.

Maxed out Project cars and the frame rates are blistering with no microstutter or draw distance problems, GTA 5 looks awesome and the frame rates again are 60+ maxed out

Just overall a much smoother experience.

The last Nvidia card I had was a 7600gt, and after moving back to Nvidia, I think I'll stay here !

Cheers for all the help and input

I can't believe so many people are saying things like 'I did notice a difference'! Of course you did - the GTX980Ti absolutely obliterates the 280X/HD7970, they are night and day.

You got a great deal, enjoy it! Your CPU is still fine.

I didn't think I'd notice such a considerable difference. I'd heard people say anything over 60fps is pointless in gaming because your eyes cant differentiate between 60fps and say 100fps.

It's clearly nonsense.

To be fair I was happy with the R9 280X performance, until I plugged this bad boy in.

I can only liken it to when you get your hands on some audiophile level speakers, the music was good before, but it's like rediscovering it all over again through better speakers.

I can't run through my games collection quick enough...;)
