I feel lucky to live in the UK. Nothing ever happens here. The odd volcano would be nice though, just to liven things up a bit.

I think he's in Auckland. It's a long way from Christchurch.

He resides in NZ, don't think he is from there.

Hope everyone is okay, 7.4 is a bloody big quake, that centered on a city wouldn't leave much behind if it was the right type of quake. (apparently there is a different in up and down versus side to side quaking, one significantly worse for the centred area)

Went on for about 2min, which is an eternity. Gentle rocking motion. Awful thing is that you don't know if it's going to get worst or not. Some early reports of damage online but dead quiet outside.

a 7.4 magnitude earthquake is HUGE, if it happens close to the surface. Luckily it sounds like this was pretty deep down so not much destruction up at the surface

Just got a news alert for a Tsunami warning for NZ.

Hope everyone stays safe. I visited the area two years ago and was amazed at the damage and equally at the recovery of Christchurch.

Currently texting some friends. Iyall Bay, about 10KM away from them, has had a tsunami warning and the area evacuated. Luckily even though they live on the coast they're quite high up

Typically a trough preceeds an incoming tidal wave. This pulls the tide out, regardless of ordinary tidal forces.

One of the signs of an oncoming tidal wave is that the water is drawn back from the coast into the deeper sea by the wave.

If you're near the sea and the tide goes very far out, it's a good idea to get as high and far inland as possible.
