How often do you guys upgrade your components?

I probably go a bit more OTT than most. There a 3 things I definitely change annually without fail, and my most recent upgrades were -

GPU (Titan X Maxwell to GTX 1080)
MB (ROG VIII Extreme Z170 to ROG IX Formula)
CPU (i7 6700k to i7 7700k)

I know most people buy these things to last them a few years but I just like keeping current and I enjoy tinkering with new hardware.
Also as a bonus, my older hardware is still pretty new so when I come to sell it I get good prices and have to put very little to my new gear.

You'll eventually find the upgrade merry go round soon tires as you get older and realise it can be pointless. IMHO your recent upgrades show it. I used to be a bit like that but looking at your recent upgrades you've still got it bad.

Pretty much whenever something breaks, I don't tend to play the latest and greatest games so I don't need cutting edge top tier parts and for what I actually use it for my rig performs great. That being said I do plan on some upgrades this year; GPU, 128GB SSD and 2x1TB drives along with a new case/set of fans. With those that should do me fine for the foreseeable future

Admittedly it's always fun to have a play about with new stuff and if you have the budget go for it but upgrading at every possible opportunity for marginal performance gains is a waste of £

PC was built in 2011. Since then I have only made these changes:

CPU: i5 2500K > i7 2700K
GPU: GTX480 > GTX570 > GTX660 > HD7970 > GTX780TI > R9 390 NitroX 8GB Crossfire
RAM: 2x 4GB Corsair Vengeance > 4x 4GB Corsair Vengeance
SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 > Samsung 830

I upgrade parts when there no loger fit for the job.

The gpu upgrade was pointless. You have the same cpu with a new name

Still using a i7 920 on speedstep.
32 gb ram
Only just upgraded the gpu to a 970 from a 670 in the last 6 months.
Got a 1tb and 500gb ssd's last year as well.

Pc runs really well and wont be upgrading until something goes wrong.

When there's a major performance improvement that I'll actually notice gaming at 1080p.

Last upgrade was replacing my 7950 with an R9 290.

When I was younger I did full upgrade like every 18 months but since I7 came out the improvement have not been significant enough to upgrade. Games don't look to be that much harder to run and I'm only into light content creation so I doubt I will see a huge improvement.

Best upgrade of the last 2 years was an SSD and a X5650.

Now I just tinker, I am finishing up a completely aesthetic update as I wanted to try hardline cooling.

The system I have is on its second GPU in like 6 years.

I plan to get an ultra wide and appropriate GPU to drive it. But this is more of a because I can. My pc works grate at 1080p.

Most of my upgrading effort and cash goes on other PC stuff to make my total experience better, like a Synology NAS, updating my HTPC, thinking of building an unraid box from old server hardware for example.

I only upgrade when something goes wrong. About 4 months ago my 3770K went boom. So upgraded from
CPU 3770K > 6600K
GPU 7850HD > 1060 6GB
Mobo someGA z77x > Asus Z170-A
RAM 2x8GB team group > 2x4GB corsair vengeance

This will do me for a while. Shame really that my mobo went too else would have got a xeon but life goes on so dont care.

Depends. I had my 2500k nearly 5 years. Could have easily kept it another couple. Progress in cpu performance is pitiful these days.

But gpu is probably only good for a couple of years tops.

AMD to 3570k for ages until I decided to go hardline watercooling, then got a 6700k. For some reason now have a 7700k (sold my atx mobo to go mitx and the buyer wanted my 6700k for a decent price).

Had a AMD Athlon 64 X2, (can't remember the GPU) for a while before upgrading to a Q6600 with an 8800 GTX. Upgraded the 8800GTX to a GTX 570.

Then retired the Q6600 with an i5 3750k, then upgraded through GTX 770, 970 and now a 1080.

I only tend to upgrade when I see a real performance boost on the CPU. GPU seems to be getting updated with every new series currently. Although to be fair I was happy with my 970 until getting VR and could've happily waited on the next series.

Yeah - the GPU upgrade is really easy to get sucked into. From a 7950 to 980ti and then SLI.
Now happy with m-itx and single card.

For me, the performance from 3rd gen core i CPUs to the 7th just isn't worth it to me currently, trying to get a decent clocking 2nd hand 3770k but until we get that big bump in performance I probably wont budge.

My 3570k's still chugging away in my works PC (mainly used for CAD), I just built another new PC for an employee with a 7700k (got one cheap) and tbh there's very little difference for what we use it for.

No idea why anyone would replace a 6700k with a 7700k when overclocking it 200mhz has the same effect

I upgrade at least 3 times a day!

Actually I vary rarely upgrade. I tend to re-build a mostly new system every 3 or 4 years, with one recent exception where I got a 1070, but that was largely just an excuse to move my old 780 into my other halfs PC.

Tell me about it. Only reason I did was selling my atx mobo off the buyer asked if they could have my cpu as well for a decent price. No brainer as already had an m-itx Z170 mobo in my media PC.

Made enough for a new CPU and now have bigger cahoonas at 5.1Ghz (and I needed the cahoona upgrade)
