Solid Well Made Wood Beds - Where To Buy

We bought ours from Dunelm
It was an oak one, about £400-500.

One thing I did notice was that the beds in the showroom were all badly put together and loose feeling.
The design of the joints was ok (on the bed we chose) the showroom staff had just assembled it badly.

The fitters who built ours did a good job and it's very solid.

Might also be worth looking at zoo in Nottingham.
They import stuff from Asia and they had lots of chunky wooden beds last year.

From what I saw quality was pretty good and prices were OK.

As much as the beds are nice on these sites there is nothing grabbing me. Im not saying i would buy this exact model but there is a wait time of 5 to 6 weeks. Its super chunky and looks good although i can see how they have joined the side rails to the headboards.

Ask if the sides are joined to the headboard/footboard with tenons. If it is and you glue the joints when assembling that bed will be solid, but you will never be able to remove it from the room :p. I prefer the look of the less chunky oak beds, but at the £400 price range they will all be joined with brackets and probably dowels rather than tenon joints. Which could be nice and solid if you glue the dowels and tighten the brackets up nice and tight. The slats are a bit weedy on the £400 beds and usually have middle legs to take the weight, which limits what you can store under it.

Cheers for the info Mark. Not many places show you how they are assembled but your right in what your saying, they all tend to be dowels and brackets. The Warren Evans beds video someone posted show the ends fitted with a tenon/ big slot and screws. I dont want to glue it because i will be needing to move it at some point.

Yeah the Warren Evans beds use Mortise and Tenon joints with 3 screws which is great but they also use proper wood slats that are screwed in from top to bottom which eliminates side to side/yaw.

There's really no way for the forward or back motion to loosen with three screws in a Tenon unless the wood cracks...even if the screws loosened it would still be impossible for the joint itself to loosen because the screws are in sideways and not face on.

I think you're over thinking it and may end up getting one of those ugly beds you're linking to because you're not able to visit a showroom.

If I were you I'd just wait until I'm in London next and pop into a Warren Evans showroom - all their beds are on show.

I wont be in London anytime soon. I forgot to mention, another issue i have is their lack of pictures, they show one pic of the bed with a duvet and pillows covering most of it, you dont get to see the bed on its own or without the wood being covered up. I thought this Almond bed looked nice but i would like more pics before i would order one.

Yeah I agree with you actually on that they definitely need to veer away from the artful/tasteful single well lit images and get some more pics up - it's a weird one though because how many other companies (other than ikea) produce video's showing how they are put together (even though it's just one example I know) or have show rooms that allow you to inspect their entire range and show cross sections of their range too.. they are quite proud though and really just want you to come and have a look...which is useless if you're far away. The owner is desperate not to go mass market though which I quite like.

I've got a show room near me in Shoreditch so obviously I feel a bit more secure than someone that cant see for themselves.

Indigo make some great furniture, including bed frames.

I have the Crofter's Oak myself, and it's a really beautiful frame...and absolutely rock solid.

They use a restored 1920's Wadkin Ripsaw, which leaves a really nice pattern in the oak and it feels lovely to the touch too (it's very strokeable wood :D).

I really like those beds, someone else posted about Indigo, what put my off was the mattress sits over the side beams, so i was a bit put off that the mattress might slide sideways easily. Looks lovely though. Oh yeah and 6 to 8 weeks delivery put me off too.

See if you can find a local company. Usually if you spend enough (I bought a load of furniture) they will deliver and even put it together :p

I hated the thought of spending £££ without seeing an item such as a bed first

Definitely find a local company. We spent ages looking a the usual suspects but ended up getting a cracking deal on a solid chunky rustic oak bed with matching bed side drawers and mattress. Delivered and built too. Get out and talking to some furniture shops and I'm sure they'll soon point you in the direction of some local places. Ours was M6beds up in Stoke on recommendation from the chap we bought our house from!

Thanks for the further suggestions guys. I dont really know of local places that do these kind of beds. Im new to the area and seaching online did not find anything local to me.
I already bought a couple of 'Santana Reclaimed Oak' pieces of furniture and although expensive, its very nice, so i decided to take a chance on the double bed, the instructions have a bad drawing of how it goes together, it does not look that wonderful but if it gives me any hassle or makes any noises i will fit some heavy duty brackets or screws or bolts, that way the bed will match the nice bedside cabinets perfectly. I got this place that i already used to price-match and so im getting the double bed for £488. The coffee table and bedside cabinets are heavy and well made so fingers crossed im happy with the bed frame, it gets delivered next Tuesday.

here is an idea of why im so fussy, here is my current bed and you can see how sturdy it is, the side beams have heavy steel brackets at each end and they have a steel beam running along the inside of the side beams, its all bolted together with big long bolts, needless to say its a very old bed now and it still does not budge or squeek.

Here is what you want: https://www.warrenevans.com/

They're the best in my opinion and fantastic value. Don't bother with their mattresses though as I think they are over priced.

Sorry for the bump, I used this thread as reference when I chose a bed. We travelled a distance to see the beds in person and the people in the showroom where excellent. That is where it ends. A bed was delivered, made incorrectly a month ago. The bed slants downwards to the point they couldn't install the drawer underneath because of the gap decreasing. They left me the bed, telling me someone would be in touch and for a month we have been trying to get them to put right this error. If they haven't arrived by Thursday at a time of my choosing they can come take it away and refund me.

Show room is excellent, bed seems decent for the money but aftersales care makes PC world seem like logitech. I'd avoid these at all costs. Look at their reviews and filter by 1 star reviews and see how many recent people are upset with after sales care.
