I'm still on the fence regarding whether to get a Ryzen 1700 or a 7700k. Similar price and of course the pre-existing arguments of Clock speed vs Cores etc etc.

However, a 6700k can be had in the odd place for around £260, a full 70 quid below the current pricing for 7700/1700. Alright it might overclock (on average) 500mhz lower than the 7700k but the performance difference at 1440p (when the GPU will be the limiting factor) is only 2-4% and it is a hell of a lot cheaper.

Thoughts/criticisms/sweet nothings?

I'd say it depends on the overall use of the system and how long you are planning on keeping the system.

I would also recommend watching this video on the Ryzen argument.

Depends what you want to do. I have a 6700K @ 4.8Ghz atm, however I want more cores for my Unity project and rendering and the 6700K doesn't cut it. Also I want it for gaming.

So I wouldn't buy one right now. I do not see the point when the 1700 costs bit over £320, and you can grab a B350 Tomahawk, and overclock it with the stock cooler is coming.
You cannot alternative 8c/16t system for £450-460 providing the same levels of performance.
Gaming there are some issues with Windows 10 but these going to be patched by MS soon, and hopefully we going to see more multi core games.

Otherwise if you do not care about anything other than gaming, and you do not care about future proofing etc, get the 6700K @ £260 with the cheapest Z270 board and you are good to go.
It will serve you well on gaming for the next year or so.

If you're just gaming then sure, it's still the 2nd quickest chip for gaming you can buy. Anything remotely multithreaded though and I would avoid and get a Ryzen chip.

It depends on the games - anything which is more lightly threaded the Core i7 6700K still has the edge, and if it is more multi-threaded,the R7 CPUs will have the edge.

Edit!!

If that is the secondhand place I am thinking off,it was closer to £200ish a few months ago,so if I were you OP,it might be prudent to wait until the R5 1600X launches,as Intel might be forced to drop Core i7 7700K prices which will affect secondhand Core i7 6700K,at least I think they would!!

Must admit based on the above my (proverbial) needle is starting to quiver towards Ryzen, I only really game on it but I want to keep whatever CPU I buy for a while (I've had this I7 920 d0 since 2010 so have been spoilt a bit).

If you could save around £200 on the whole platform then maybe, otherwise I would go for ryzen. No point to stick to platform that's going to be dead in a year or two and unsupported for £50-100 saving. Even the R5 4/8 or 6/12 should be nearly a match for the 6700k and for same or lower price for a newer platform.

I know waiting in the tech industry splits opinions, but, I would wait and see what the 1600x is like for gaming, 6 cores 12 threads and I high clock speed and its supposed to be around the £200 mark, if your PC is just for gaming (like mine is) I can't see the point of spending more an CPU
