Played a proper run through of the first scenario of the Descent campaign and it was great. Try to get the second one done tonight hopefully.

It's rulebound but they feel stifling, it's a pretty perfect balance they've managed to hit.

Just got back from UK Games Expo, highlight of the weekend had to be Tiny Epic Galaxies. I understand it was recently on Tabletop though and is sold out everywhere, unless you fancy paying silly money. :(

The expansion, Beyond the Black, is just fulfilling the Kickstarter now (shipping notes went out last week). Expect the base game to be available again very soon.

Played a couple of old favourites on Sunday, pus one new game: Spiel des Jahres nominee Magic Maze. It's a real time cooperative game for 1-8 players that takes maybe 15 minutes to play. The theme is that a party of four heroes were caught by the overlord of the local dungeon, who stripped them of all their gear and money. To continue their adventuring career they need to re-equip, and having no money the only way they can do so is by stealing what they need from a shopping mall. The players have to explore the mall to find the stores containing each hero's gear then escape through predetermined exits, all before the timer runs out. So far, so simple.

However, there are three twists. The first is that the players control the heroes in concert, and each player can (usually) only do one thing. You may know you want the Wizard to move east, but unless you have a tile that lets you move a hero east you can't do anything. The second is that once the game begins, players are forbidden to communicate by any means other than putting a large red pawn in front of the person you want to do something. Lastly, every time you flip the three-minute game timer you pass your action tile one seat to the left.

We played about five rounds, at counts from five to the full eight, and everybody was having a great time. It's total anarchy at the start but once you get into a rhythm you'll have three people taking a sequence of a dozen moves in seconds and it feels really satisfying. Hopefully we'll soon feel confident enough to use the hero special abilities.

After not touching it for a while played a couple of the scenarios of Zombicide last night (with some house rules chucked in) with a campaign plan behind it all and had a fantastic game. Both went down to the wire with really close wins. Keep forgetting how good a game this is.

Played Dogs of War last night. It's the first time I've played and I didn't do particularly well but still really enjoyed it. Would like to give it another go now I've got a better understanding of how it all works.

Also had a couple of rounds of Coup, one of Anomia and one of Qwixx

It's a good game.

As it happens I just got hold of Paolo Mori's newest game, Ethnos, and played that on Sunday. It's OK but I prefer Dogs of War (and Libertalia too, even though I sold it). Also played: Camel Up, a couple of rounds of Dodekka, and Between Two Cities with the Capitals expansion. I like Capitals; it adds Civic buildings that score by being next to other types of buildings but have one type that reduces their value to 1 like Houses and Factories, and city mats that have natural hazards to build around.

Played a first run through of Osprey Publishing's Post Apocalypse skirmish rules Scrappers, it's a rule set based on Robert A. Faust's Brink of Battle multi period rules which uses opposed D10 rolls to resolve. I have to say I really enjoyed it, good simple rule set, speedy gameplay mechanics and what looks to be a very good campaign system.

I also like the fact that as it doesn't have any affiliated miniatures the world is your oyster I've formed a Lords of Gamma (Mutants) team and was using WH40K Chaos Cultists, Genestealer Neophyte Hybrids and some figures from Mantic's Deadzone, my friend had formed a Freelancer (Unafiliated Mercs) team and was using figures from all sorts of suppliers. The rules are WYSIWYG so anyone who loves hunting down figs or doing conversions it's perfect.

Cthulhu Wars Onslaught Two arrived, which was my excuse to try out the Tcho-Tchos. I think they may be too strong in a low count game.

We also played more Magic Maze (and actually won twice this time), Tiny Epic Western finally got a run-out, and finished off with Five Tribes.

Last night we played The Game (and won). Good, light cooperative card game with very few rules, so pick up the German version on Amazon because it's half the price.

After that was The Gallerist, which I always enjoy. Didn't win for once either, I made a couple of misjudgements that cost me heavily.

Finished off with Magic Maze again, as there were some people who hadn't played it yet.

Tried out Monopoly Gamer with the kids. Quite fun and a good variation of Monopoly, primarily due to it being of a sensible length with only going round the board 8 times. A bit gimmicky, but if you don't mind Monopoly and like Mario it is good.

Think we will still play pandemic more though, the kids (10 & 12) are starting to get the hang of it and understand the teamwork being important rather than them 'doing stuff' individually.

I've been playing a lot of Betrayal at House on the Hill and Forbidden Dessert with my niece.
We had to adapt the rules on Betrayal a little bit because it's a bit odd to play with just two people, so we've transformed it into more of a co-op game with more obstacles to deal with until the big bad shows up.

We play a fair amount of Pandemic as well, it seems to be my niece's favourite game from my collection.

Looking forward to when the KickStarter delivery for 7th Continent finally arrives, hopefully early next month... that one should go down pretty well.

Last night's game tally: Orleans (by request), I lost narrowly thanks to the power of the Sacristy saving one of my opponents from multiple taxation and torture events. Then Camel Up while we waited for the other table to finish (I lost, but I always do and who cares), and finished off the evening by destroying everyone in a six-player game of Ethnos.

First game of Massive Darkness last night.

Some interesting mechanics which take some getting used to but for me its more enjoyable than Descent and more in depth than Zombicide.
2 deaths near the start before we got decent items but after that it was easier as we settled i to our roles and levelled up (spend xp for skills) despite the monsters levelling up too (each tile is a different level which means the monsters get harder.)
The monsters have loot and if they can use it, they will (weapons or armour).

Look forward to playing again.

Brought out the old and the new last night. Started with Legacy: The Testament of Duc de Crecy, which is best described as "bonker placement" - you're trying to establish a French noble dynasty over three generations, marrying off your kids and having children and socialising and acquiring titles and wealth. Good fun, quite fast to play and everyone enjoyed it. I doubt it will spend a year plus on the shelf before the next play.

Finished with Tiny Epic Quest, which arrived the other day. The individual mechanics are fine, but they've been thrown together in a way that makes the game completely broken as designed. Avoid like syphilis.
