things are changing massively, national grid is no longer the system operator, that is now a seperate company. Their monopoly is soon to be challenged as other firms will now be able to tender for work that previously was done only by them. competition is coming and that will drive down prices.

Just like BT Openreach you mean where they can charge exactly what they like because they have a near monopoly? Its not like there is an alternative distribution network to the National Grid.

I think that is the point, ofgem want competition. for new connections it isn't a given that the infrastructure will be built and maintained by grid. they'll have to become competitive or lose out on those tenders to other companies.

Can't wait to see how Ofgem will deal with several different companies owning and maintaining their own transmission network assets with the huge system operator and connection complications this will bring.

A race to the bottom is a bad idea for the nation's critical infrastructure. That said, Grid are too expensive.
