Just by way of an update I took it to an independent Porsche specialist as I had a brake servo error and also to get them to take a good look over the car to see if there was anything else amiss.

They cleared the fault code for the brake servo error, but it reappeared and they are replacing the servo under warranty (£300), they changed the gearbox oil, also under warranty as it was causing the gear shifts to be a bit too sharp (£400) and they also fixed a wet patch in the head lining which was caused by the rear wiper tubing being split. Generally the said the car is a very good example of a Cayenne but did say Cayenne's are great when they are working, but any electrical problems can potentially be expensive as the systems are so complicated, far more so than on a 911.

Is this the dealer you bought the car from? If it is, it's good to hear they actually carrying out the work under warranty!

Just as well you had one as well.. a grand's worth of bills after just three months

No, a local specialist is doing the work and the supplying dealer is covering the cost, as they are so far away from me it's not practical to take the car back.

Fair enough. Still nice to see the seller honouring the warranty. Also shows just how important a solid warranty is when running one of these :p

The car is finally back after a slightly extended stay, it turned out there was a split in one of the servo hoses in a difficult to reach spot which caused the servo to burn out. It's all sorted after several more hours and a £1.2k bill which was picked up by the supplying garage.

Sod owning a car like this without a warranty!

Also...

Looking forward to hearing about the repair bills :p

How long's the warranty...

It ran out today!

The advice from the specialist that is doing the work (PIE Performance) is that in their view most of the warranties available aren't worth the paper they're written on anyway and you're better off just putting the money to one side, or in my case, crossing my fingers!

It is a great car however, penny pinching aside I can't think what I'd rather have instead of it.

Further update for continuity, I was still experiencing a bang through the transmission on downshifts from 6th to 5th. I spoke to the sellers and they said try driving it in tiptronic mode only to see whether that made any difference. It was then apparent the manual side of the box would only allow me to call for upshifts, but wouldn't let me shift down.

They sent a driver up from Southampton, collected the car about 10 days ago and have now said they are replacing the gearbox valve block, which is a pretty expensive bit, £2.5k at dealer prices. Hopefully that should sort it out. A bit annoying but good that these niggles are being sorted out under warranty before they become my problem!

Another update, another year on.

Over the last year, other than fuel (lots of it, still averaging 15.6mpg) the only costs save for an MOT (sailed through apart from a bulb) has been to change the brakes. I was getting a wear sensor light coming on so changed the discs and pads, it may have been a faulty sensor as there was actually a lot of life left in the pads, the discs had significant wear but were still within tollerance. I did it all myself and other than some tight bolts and having to buy a non standard socket for the fronts it was no more difficult than on any other car. Total cost about £400 for pads, discs and sensors, which on current usage will not need changing by us in future.

The wife loves it, it does the job for us perfectly, well pleased. I suspect someway down the line it will be replaced by another one.

Just reached 2 years ownership, covering 20k.

I've had a knocking noise from the transmission for a month or two which was caused by a failing prop shaft, this is very common on both the Cayenne and the Touareg. Fortunately a few more suppliers have popped up in recent years, reducing the price from around £970 to £225. A local specialist quoted £200 + VAT to fit the part, but I nipped over to my friendly mechanic at the weekend and we managed to swap it in half an hour without any difficulty. It's made a big difference, reducing a lot of the transmission noise, making it sound a feel a lot smoother.

The specialist have today just carried out a minor service for me, with no issues to report, in fact they said it's the best example, at that age that they've come across. So far, so good!

First Porsche dealership experience, in for a gear selector recall. Got a Macan as a courtesy car, which was nice enough, base model, decent kit but lacking in grunt and a bit small for us.

They did a full vehicle check and they only thing they could find wrong with it was the sticky pad on the front number plate coming off slightly, plus a brake wear warning sensor which had been wired out. Not bad for a 16 year old car!
