Maybe I'm missing something but to me looks like this i5 is 4 core and the i5 8600k is 6 core and are the same price with motherboard.

Or you could get 8400 and save £100.

That i5 price seems good, less than I paid for my 2500K when it was new. Though I'm not sure why you would go X299 and then get a 4 thread i5...

Mainstream chips only usable on high end boards which cost significantly more than the chip. One can only hope someone got a kick in the ass for that idea.

Twice the memory performance and a better platform. The 4 core 2011 chips are also pretty solid for 100 FPS gaming in DX11.

hey they can be used as place holder for i9 chips or as practising deliding and memory tester on Apex as well

I haven't really looked at all the quad cores but the E5 quad core chips are quad channel.

I feel like if someone gonna think/plan for a CPU upgrade it should be only within the near future. If an upgrade is planned for let's say in 2-3 years time it's not worth it, he/she better off buying the new platform at that point of time. Looking at people with X99 platform and 5820K/6800K, when they upgrade they are not likely buying 6950X/6900K/5960X (1696 v3 maybe

) but rather recent AMD/Intel platform. Unless they got some sweet deal something like 6950X @ £500

It makes me wonder if there are any Black Friday deals on the Core i7 7740X and the X299 motherboards,it might be worth considering over a Core i5 8600K and a Z370 motherboard!

Aye as someone looking to buy into X299 I might get the MB I want and stick a 7800x in there for now and wait to see what happens with the higher core prices.
