Bedside clock losing time

I’ve just returned from holiday after a week away and plugged my bedside clock/light back in and set the time. A few hours later, when I went to bed, I noticed the bedside clock was now showing an hour and 45 minutes slow. I reset the time again before going to sleep.

In the morning, I once again found the clock an hour and a half behind.

Does anyone know what causes clocks to lose time in this way? It was working perfectly before I went on holiday. Is it for the bin?

Many thanks.

All I can think of, is there any switch/setting for 50/60hz that you may have knocked? Some plug in digital clocks generate the timebase from the mains frequency, if it is counting a second every 60 cycles, rather than every 50, then it would loose 12 minutes an hour
