Starting with some golden oldies...

ATI Rage 64 (Mach64)
ATI Rage 64 + Voodoo I (that pass-through port...)
Voodoo Banshee
NVIDIA MX440
ATI X800 (possibly before the above... I forget the dates)
NVIDIA 8800GT
Some sort of MSI Frozr with 1gb VRAM...
NVIDIA 760 4GB
NVIDIA 1060 6GB

I seem to have favoured nvidia of late, but that's purely based on lower power consumption and acoustics per unit performance. I'll flip back the moment AMD produce something "good enough" that is also more frugal and quieter than nvidia options.

ATi Rage Onboard 97-03ish
ATi 9800np 2003-2005ish
Nvidia 9600GT 2005ish
ATi x800 2005ish (RMA replacement from retailer for 9600GT)
Nvidia 8800gts 2008ish
ATi 5850 2011ish
Nvidia gtx670 2014ish
Replacement pending :)

I may have forgotten some upgrades, but think the above is probably about right. I don't change hardware unless it's necessary now. Whole new pc built recently which I put off for a while as I was moving house, but GPU upgrade still pending as prices are crazy!

This is an easy one. Every graphic card purchase was a major life event for me.

Diamond edge 3d (always wanted a voodoo that came shortly after but couldn't afford it.)
Riva Tnt 2 Vanta
Geforce 4 mx440 (The worst GeForce 4. No pixel shading. Basically a GeForce 2 in disguise)
Ati Radeon 9600 pro (couldn't afford the 9700pro. Was still better than anything NVIDIA).
Geforce 6600
Geforce 6800GT (What a leap forward that was).
Geforce 7800Gt
Geforce 8800GT
Radeon 5770
Radeon 4870
Radeon 5850
Geforce 560ti
Radeon HD7950
Radeon R9 290X
Geforce 980
Geforce 980TI
Geforce 1080

I've been building my own systems for years, but only in the last 2 years have I been doing the "regular upgrade" thing.

From memory...
Creative 3D Blaster Voodoo 2 graphics card
Geforce MX 200
Geforce 4 ti 4600
Radeon 9700
(on reflection, there was a phase in the early-to-mid 2000s where I used to swap my graphics card every few weeks. I've found posts on Usenet where I was asking about the ATI X800 series, I can't recall which I actually owned...)
Geforce 8800 GTS
Geforce GTX 260
... which lasted until 2016, when I bought:
GTX 670
R9 290X
GTX 1060
GTX 1070
GTX 1070 Ti

Of all of the cards I've owned, the Voodoo 2 was the one that I still viscerally remember having an impact on me. It was the first time I'd had better graphics on my PC than on my console.

Riva TNT2
GeForce 3 ti200
Radeon 9600 Pro
Radeon 9800 (Remember when OcUK got a batch in for about £180 in approx 2004?)
Radeon XT 800 PE (another deal from OcUK)
Nvidia 6800
Radeon X1950 (First PCI-E card........ with a s754 CPU randomly)
Nvidia 8800 GTX (these were SERIOUS at the time, combined with the Intel E6600 in 2006 was a beast!)
Radeon 4870X2
Nvidia GTX 480
Nvidia GTX 970
Nvidia GTX 1070 (Which cost £390 in Jan 2017 ...... lol at current prices)

(I remember the transition from Matrox G200 8MB to GeForce 32MB, bought the latter for playing Counter-Strike, was a complete disappointment, laggy framerate in Counter-Strike and awful image quality in 2D desktop, compared to the Matrox G200 8MB).

Have an update here:

  • ATi Mach 64 1mb (I upgraded this to 2mb thinking it would improve quake - it didn't) - '96
  • (paired with the Mach 64) Videologic PowerVR 4MB - '96 - For Quake amongst other things - probably should have just purchased the 3Dfx but I still remember being blown away by this thing. c. £150
  • Ati Rage Pro 8MB - nearly forgot this, incl. in a Gateway PC. '98.
  • (paired with the Rage Pro) Orchard 3Dfx Voodoo 2 12MB - '98 c.£150
  • 3Dfx Voodoo 3 2000 - '99 c.£80 or so. Wasn't expensive.
  • Geforce 2MX - 2000 - think it was a Creative card. This pup was with me for what felt like forever. Even went into a new Athlon XP 1800 build. c.£120 - couldn't afford the Pro.
  • PNY Geforce 4 Ti 4600 - Late 02/early 03 - was when there was a deal and this was no longer top dog
  • Sapphire ATI X800 XL - Feb '05 - can't be certain on which X800, but the XL sounds about right.
  • BFG Geforce 7800 GT 256MB - Oct '05 - I remember this being quite an upgrade, even over the ATI.
  • Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB - May '07 - The first time I spent over £200 I think!
  • Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB - Summer 2010, £240
  • Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6950 "Dual Fan Edition" 2048MB - Jan 2012 - needed to refresh my gaming PC Still just over £200.
  • MSI GeForce GTX 780 Lightning 3072MB - Dec 2013 - a cracking deal from here and gorgeous card. Real boost on what I had before. £420 - nearly double over what I'd paid before!
  • MSI GeForce GTX 980Ti Gaming 6144MB - July 2015 - At £569 my most expensive card of all time. Loved the silent idle fans in desktop use.
  • MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8GB - Sept 2017 - £509, following the warnings from Gibbo et all I jumped on this before the mining craze.

And then in August I move to a laptop which included a Nvidia 1070 (and been pretty happy with it!). As you can see I've always been a 'value' conscious consumer and might not be back in for anything else for a while, particularly if a laptop can meet all my needs.
