now this may come across as slightly cold but I don't see why the hospital are so keen to stop him being transferred to Italy.

surely letting the parents take the lad to Italy harms no one, if they really think he has no chance of survival let the Italians take over his treatment and associated costs. its frees up a bed that could be used to treat another ill child and saves the trust money.
the boy will still receive I would imagine the finest care there is (especially given the fact it seems one of the richest states in the world is footing the bill that's the Vatican not Italy).

It may harm Alfie.

Parents do not supersede the rights of a British Citizen if the parents wanted to take Alfie to the Congo to have a ritualistic tribal chant to remove the demons inside him as a cure, would that be ok?

As above, the doctors think the best interests of the patient are served by offering palliative care, not moving them on a medical flight and potentially putting them through more procedures.

The worrying thing is though is the doctors cannot be charged for anything here. But if there names do make it out its worrying to think what some of these supporting nut jobs may indeed do to the doctors who are the innocent parties only acting upon there morals and in his best interest.

Not sure if that's awkward use of a full stop but the doctors are not immune from charges if they are doing something wrong.

surely less harmful than if he dies.

You'd think so, but governments have a right to ensure that people in its country die with dignity. Being flown to Italy to have a potentially painful procedure to receive the exact same treatment he gets in the UK is just silly.

  1. Alfie was born healthy in may 2016 to Thomas and Kate aged 18 & 19.
  2. At age 2 months he developed a new strabismus (squint) and showed subtle signs of delayed development (lack of head control, sleeping all the time and not reaching for things).
  3. At 6 months he was taken to a specialist children's doctor who formally documented his development as being that of a 6-8 week old baby.
  4. .....
  5. .....

What. the. ****?!

I have 2 kids, youngest is 6 months old. As a(n) [attentive] parent you spent a lot of time marvelling over their development, often checking up on whether they are on course - it's completely natural. I would love to know why it took so long for this poor kid to get a decent diagnosis. Was it the parents being stupid / lazy / ignorant, or was it just a slow uptake on the part of the NHS? It seems unlikely that an earlier diagnosis would have changed the outcome at all by the sounds of it, but I'm still interested to know.

The parents are clearly idiots. They seem to be enjoying the attention in a perverse kind of way. The dad appears different in his response to the press than the other recent case.

The best thing this family can do is get themselves to somewhere like http://www.bluebellwood.org/ , enjoy their remaining time together (as much as is possible in this situation) and let him die in dignity, away from the baying media and cretinous mobs. If you have kids, I challenge you to go on the Bluebell Wood website, read the stories and not be wailing within 10 minutes. A charity well worth your donations.

This place really is amazing, my little girl passed away here and i am still going weekly for bereavement counselling...i hate the fact that this place has to exist, and hate it even more that i have had to use it's services, but i literally don't know if i would be here today if it was not for their support.

I’m so glad I’ve got this forum to read and engage in intelligent conversation as opposed to Facebook where I’m currently in about 4 different arguments because I said the poor lads suffering should be allowed to end

So politics, news, etc aside.

Does anyone know what Alfies actual medical condition is ? Obviously tempers and opinions run high on this topic - im just interested in his actual medical condition, from that, one can form an opinon.

What little I know, his brain is basically mostly water and thus isn't working properly/at a vegetative state level - is this correct ?

If it is correct, if the forum can confirm/deny this - then he will pass away within days unaided.

It's a completely awful thing, and my heart goes out to him and his family - but excuse me not knowing any more info on this - what is it people are fighting for exactly? - if the poor little dude is in that state, are they trying to keep him on a ventilator ? If so, why ? I'm assuming his brain won't grow back ?

From what i can tell it is a Mitochondrial condition, the mitochondria are organelles inside your cells that use a process called aerobic respiration to produce energy for the cell, given that doctors say he has a version of this they haven't seen before.. the general outcome is the breakdown of brain cells.. leading to his current state of zero upper brain function.

I *almost* opened that can of worms too, when a former work colleague posted that this boy was being MURDERED (their emphasis, not mine).

Unfortunately I did open a can of worms when I asked people to please stop spreading false information about the pain drugs Alfie was going to be given when taken off the ventilator, as it could cause issues when a doctor needs to give them to others.

Within a couple of hours I was being sent abusive messages on facebook and stupid me forgot to change my account settings from a few months ago.. Even though i had my phone on silent my watch was still going off and keeping me awake. Ive had to delete my facebook messenger for now as every time I try and change settings it crashes

This kind of thing has no place in 2018, its not the bloody middle ages anymore.
I would love to know the thought processes involved in these rants, clearly common sense and logic are not present at all.

Apparently (read I have heard first person accounts from staff) the supporters have been to local hospitals and ordered staff to provide oxygen masks saying 'you know who its for' when asked. They have obviously been declined as Alfie isn't a patient in the other hospitals and you can't just go up asking for medical supplies and expect them to be given to you. They've then threatened staff and reported back to facebook that they will share photos of the staff and security members involved. Also inferring that everyone in the NHS sticks together on a big cover up about this 'murder'.

It's a bloody disgrace and who knows what way this could escalate. Best situation is one of either Alfie Evans' body lives for a few months and people slowly forget about him or he dies quickly and the whole circus finishes quickly. It's sad and obviously losing a child is one of the worst things that can happen but the whole thing is ridiculous.
