Ah those buggers,

You'll need a special tool (no idea what its called) which sides over the long threaded part to let you undo it.

That won't work, there's only the thread bit inside the locking bar. The new one is like you've described.

Look like disconnect the water and then twist the tap base from above?

Seems an odd design! It looks to me more like a Fischer KD8 or similar which are seriously strong fixings!

Usually the threaded bar is also screwed into the underside of the tap so just twisting the whole threaded bar anticlockwise with pliers may work?
