So do any of you fellow OcUK'er have a passion for making things?

My job has slowly moved towards a more managerial role in recent years, and I've missed the hands on productivity.

Year before last I met up with a friend who had started blacksmithing as a hobby, had a go at making a few things and was hooked!
I like my cooking and knives appealed to me, so I started out making some for myself.

Here's an early forged blacksmiths knife I made from an old file.
Let's see what you guys like to turn your hands to!

what equipment do you have? power hammer or all by hand?

do your newighburs not get peedoff with all the banging?

I made a knife on a blacksmiths course earlier this year. I really enjoyed it and the temptation to start making more at home is proving hard to resist! I did the handle at home as it was only a short course to make a basic knife.

I usually use cheap wood, pallets or scrap wood I fish out of skips at work! The toybox was made entirely out of wood purchased to make a toybox, it's probably the only thing for a while I have used non scrap/pallet wood for!

Really nice Perywinkle! I have been interested in learning to make chef knives. How did you go about it? What kind of equipment is required to make at home? I currently make food ;) .

You can spend as ittle or as much as you like to get started tbh. I've spent thousands over the last 2 years, but I looked upon it as an investment.
YouTube is your friend. there are many many makers out there putting out videaos that are invaluable to beginners and experts alike. nothing beats practice though, if you can find a blacksmithing or knife making course local to you it would be a big time saver. I'm mostly self taught, but if I had to do it again I would have gone down the class route.

Been wanting to try my hand at smithing for a while now and going to book myself onto a experience day where you get to design and make something simple! :D

After that though, I want to carry on by making myself a simple forge and messing around, but am struggling to know where to do it!

I live in a flat so not something I could do on the balcony :p, but grandad as a nice double garage but has neighbors on either side and i'm worried about noise. Is it so loud that he might get OcUK specials through the letterbox or reckon it will be ok?

I have recently got into the TV show Forged in Fire and am loving seeing all these knives and swords being made, so much so that I have decided I want to give it a go, so did some googling and came up with the following

http://www.clarkeknives.co.uk/knives/tuition/bladesmith-experience-weekend/

Think it would be a great experience.

Did you do this in the end? Looks great, shame it's so far away from me :(
