Obama was the most highly scrutinised presidential candidate in American history. Republicans and hard leftists alike tried every trick in the book to bring him down. Even the libertarians joined in, with the help of some literate people who volunteered to read and write on their behalf.
Meanwhile, the conservative elites who control America's mainstream and alternative media subjected Obama to eight years of unrelenting attacks.
But of all the people who tried to destroy Obama, nobody worked as hard as the conspiracy theorists. Their accusations and predictions are virtually endless, so here's just a brief sample:
* Obama was born in Kenya, and therefore ineligible for the presidency
* his Hawaiian birth certificate is fake
* his real father was either Malcolm X or Frank M. Davis
* at the age of 19 he participated in a secret CIA mission to Mars
* he's a radical Muslim in league with the Muslim brotherhood
* he's an atheist
* he's a communist
* he's a socialist
* he's homosexual who married his male roommate while in college
* he's the Antichrist
* his wife Michelle is secretly a man
* he swore his presidential oath on the Koran
* he thanked Satan in his acceptance speech
* he's going to cancel the 2014 mid-term elections
* he's going to cancel the 2016 election
* he's going to install himself as dictator for life
* he's going to nuke the entire USA
* he's going to flood the USA with Muslim immigrants
* he's going to turn the USA into a socialist dictatorship
* he's going to take away everyone's guns
* he's going to take over Texas and impose martial law
* he threatened to kill Chelsea Clinton
* he expelled 200 military officers from the US Armed Forces because they didn't agree with his views
* he murdered his grandmother, Andrew Breitbart, and [insert long list of people here]
* he introduced Ebola to purge the US population
By the time Obama finally left office in a calm and orderly fashion, the conspiracy theorists had been comprehensively debunked and humiliated many times over. The lunatics on the fringe of the fringe were struggling to retain credibility even among their own highly rarefied circles.

But Trump's first year was a miserable failure. As September gave way to October, Trump supporters began to realise their messiah had abandoned them. The swamp was not drained, the wall was not built, and Hillary was walking free with a giant grin on her face.
Then, in October 2017, the following exchange occurred at a routine press-op:
Every sensible person on the planet recognised this for what it was: a random, throw-away comment from a confused old man with early onset dementia, who still didn't know how to handle the routine business of fronting up to the White House press corps.
But conspiracy theorists were electrified, and became convinced that Trump was speaking directly to them.
Then, on the 29th of October 2017, an anonymous user posted the following messages on 4chan's /pol/ forum:
Thus was born the QANON conspiracy, first called 'the Storm', and later 'the Great Awakening.'
So let's unpack what was supposed to have happened on the 29th:
* Hillary Clinton extradited, and her passport flagged
* massive riots in response, with many people fleeing the US
* Marines conducting 'the operation', supported by the National Guard
Perceptive readers will be aware that the 29th of October 2017 passed without incident. But this didn't stop the anonymous poster:
You can see where this is going. Faced with the continued failure of Trump's chaotic administration, his desperate supporters needed reassurance that somehow, despite all the evidence, everything was going to be OK.
The user dubbed 'QANON' is happy to oblige. For the past 11 months he has bombarded the internet with his rambling screeds, while followers eagerly 'join the dots' and boast of their enlightenment despite the fact that many of them arrive at wildly differing conclusions.
In typical conspiracy theorist fashion, everything is believed to be connected to everything else. Thus, many pre-existing conspiracy theories (e.g. Pizzagage) have been grafted into the Great Awakening, with the help of a few narrative patches to cover the cracks and logical leaps.
The web of lies constructed by QANON is vast, but the gist is easily summarised:

As you'd expect, QANON is no stable genius. He's been foolish enough to pepper his story with falsifiable predictions, all of which completely failed to eventuate. Despite this, his followers insist that he's the real deal: a secret insider with top level 'Q' clearance (something that only exists in the Department of Energy, but never mind).
The QANON madness became newsworthy when it began to go viral on social media. Originating on 4chan, it was moved to 8chan, and quickly spread to Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit (which has recently banned the QANON subreddit).
QANON finally went mainstream in August, when its cultists began to appear at Trump rallies.
Last month, some random idiot who believes the QANON nonsense got himself invited to the White House and enjoyed a photo op with Trump in the Oval Office.
Predictably, this has been interpreted as proof that Trump fully endorses the entire conspiracy theory and is working hard on behalf of its adherents.
Defenders of QANON often argue that it must be real because nobody has ever kept such an outlandish story running for this long on the internet. As with everything else they believe, this is utterly false. There are many examples of internet-based cults and runaway narratives just as bizarre as QANON, perpetuated over multiple years.
For example:
* John Titor, the time traveller from 2036 who thrilled readers from 2000-2001
* One People's Public Trust, a freeman-on-the-land scam that promised to reset the world's economy, introduce free energy, and give $10 billion in gold and silver to everyone on the planet (started in 2012, collapsed in 2017; several members are now serving time)
* The Event, a 'cosmic event horizon' orchestrated by benevolent aliens and other mysterious beings that will usher in a high-tech utopia of peace, prosperity, and spiritual advancement 'any day now' since 2013 (this is basically a UFO cult gone viral; it has dozens of branches, each with their corresponding gurus)
* Benjamin Fulford, the British nutjob who has been confidently predicting the imminent downfall of a secretive global cabal 'any day now' since 2009
