Refusing a delivery?

I've got an order for a bike that I made with Sports Direct that's been collected by Hermes, and I guess will go out for dispatch on Mon/Tue. However I no longer want it, and rather than accepting the delivery and then paying to have it returned (SD don't accept store returns for online orders), can I just refuse the delivery?

Has anyone done this before and how did it work thereafter?

*knock knock*
You open the door
"Hi, delivery for you, it's a bit big!"
"Ahh yes, that order was cancelled, can you take it back please"
"Sure thing, bye"
You close the door

Some companies charge you delivery and return costs if you reject it and haven't cancelled your order before hand. Check the websites delivery/returns policy.
