I need to replace the washer and O ring in a dripping hot tap in the bathroom. There are isolation valves under the tap but they're plastic and hard to turn without stripping the slot. So, can I do this?

Turn the combi boiler off,
Close the main stopcock under kitchen sink,
run tap until the water stops,
replace washers and O ring,
turn stopcock back on,
run tap until water flows,
turn boiler back on and done?

How long will it take for tap flow to stop?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Yes.

Open taps upstairs and downstairs to empty the pipe. How long that takes will depend on the size of length the pipes, but it'll only be a few litres.

Replace the faulty isolator while you're at it.

Best to do this sort of job while the shops are still open.
this and do your best to identify the required washer type up front ...or, speculatively purchase and take back what you don't need....
if it's ceramic buy off the web, shops can have very inflated prices.

Good point, I have a ScrewFix and Tool Station local so will do it tomorrow morning.

And have a hundred old towels to hand.
If the water keeps flowing from the tap after mains are off I won't be dismantling it :D
