hi guys a client of mine needs to upgrade to a domain server setup for a new version of an old SQL database based bit of legal software. It's currently running get this, on an old Dell pc running windows 10....home.
roll eyes etc

he just isn't going to spend big and, honestly he probably doesn't need to given where he is coming from.

the office has 4 pcs which I want to put on a domain so that they can get away from local logins. but effectively it just needs to handle domain authentication, dhcp, file sharing and the SQL server for this legal software oh and I'm going to set him up a VPN too.

what is the literal cheapest way to do this responsibly? ignore software costs I have that covered separate

Can you buy a new Gen 8 Microserver still? I'd maybe look at a Dell T30 which is £350+VAT, beef up the RAM and add more storage.

Watch out installing SQL Server on a Windows Domain Controller - there are several gotchas. From memory, if you install SQL Server first, you can't then promote the server to a DC.
