But they're talking about making use of a mobile hands free illegal aren't they?
No?

The links all say hands free devices not hands free in car, meaning you should still be able to use the built in stuff, just not the awful bluetooth headsets or wired headphones that so many people seem to use.

As Haggisman says though, everyone seems to use the phones in their hands anyway so this is largely pointless.

Reading the report, whilst the terminology might say hands free devices (which is as yet undefined, they may well include a Bluetooth headunit in the definition of a device), the narrative surrounding it all seems very much aimed at general hands free use.

Dr Gemma Briggs agreed that there were complexities to deal with if there was an outright
ban on any phone use while driving, but said: “just because something is difficult does
not mean that we should not do it”.31 Others—such as Brake and the Royal Society for the
Prevention of Accidents—have supported the call for using a hands-free mobile phone
while driving to be made a road traffic offence.32

I would rather they enforced the current rules concerning using phones, as said, far too many people are still using them. Increase the fine to £500 so it would be £500 and 6 points with no more nonsense about needing to drive for work if you exceed 12 points and getting a extension. You should get banned.

Surely just because the device happens to be part of your car, doesn't stop it being a device?

However i'd rather more effort goes into enforcing the current rules, rather than something which is virtually impossible - how do you identify if someone is talking on integrated hands free vs singing along with their music, without stopping them and checking their call history?

The focus should be on addressing dangerous driving, regardless of whether its caused by being on a phone or not
