I’m still confused by TdZ2020 - why trumpet the race option and then make it 6 miles of flat? Maybe it’s an easy way to ease newer riders into racing. I’ll be doing the group rides for sure which will be hard anyway

My Zwift team for the recent tour of london and for this tour of Zwift will be racing the A rides as the "race" ones are utterly stupid.
The same can be said for everyone else wanting to "race" it appears.
As usual, Zwift are completely out of touch with people racing on the game. I've no idea who makes decisions or decides their ridiculous approaches on their behalf. It is like they never learn, listen or just deliberately do dumb **** for giggles.

Last week I felt strong, although would've been nice to get in more than 1 midweek session. Although the only race I did on Wednesday I struggled a little, but that was due to the race rather than anything else.

I made the early split but the first group burned me a bit too much, as they where pushing 3+ turns and 4+ surges up the ramps, also not enough of a group to recover at tempo, I eased off the back and the chasing group was even stronger! Knew I couldn't sustain it so actually sat up rather than slog away solo like I normally would until the next group came along. I just knew there where not many racing so it would be a pretty boring solo effort. Decided to drop and find another ride (looking for the Crit circuit) but drew a blank.

So I joined a climbing training ride, but only did the first interval as I ran out of time. Quite a good session but found it boring as nobody else 'chatting'. I think I've become a chatterbox lol. Considering the earlier race effort power levels felt good. Went pretty deep holding my (probably incorrectly set slightly high) FTP effort but felt I could sustain it longer if required. HR right up higher than it should be, but felt sustainable.

Rode outside on a social club ride Saturday. Not a huge hard ride as spent 3/4 of it 'sweeping' a slow rider. I don't just do it on Zwift! :D

Then jumped into TdZ last night. Went full fat for the long group ride. Brutal ride, found myself shelled from group after group after making one of the front ones. They where happily pulling at 3+ so could sit in at 2.5-2.7 yet some of the surges at 5+ where hurting me. I held back a little ramping and holding 4w/kg but burned myself doing so while also getting gapped, part of that probably due to the fatigue from the day before. Eventually settled into 3 different groups, rolling good turns but each got split either by catching groups in front (I'd got shelled from before) so the strong riders sprinted across the closing gap killing the group, or again when a strong group from behind came through it would take the strong couple of riders and shell the rest of us.

Still Leith hill came along and I found myself easily one of the strongest around these same groups. Distancing most of the riders from the last couple of groups by the village, including multiple names I recognised as strong riders from earlier who'd dropped me. Some quality sustained threshold up Leith, holding 2.7/3.0/3.2 on the different gradients actually felt managable but I knew the length of it so didn't really go too deep just kept the gear turning. A couple of the dips/eases off I actually lost out on a few spaces as I dropped speed on them rather than surging like I normally would (and did for some), trying to manage my effort a little. Still quality threshold, I went from top 200 from the frantic start, down to about 360 by the base of the climb, then finished in 300 or something. 202 on ZP.

You go over the hill which is 20-30 seconds over threshold, then have to keep the power on for another 10 seconds or so depending on where you are in the pack. Then you hit some downhill rollers where you need to pay attention as it can split here.
Damn, ok that does sound hard! I hadn't appreciated the hill was that long, so it's a bit more than a 'bump'! :o

Have still not ridden it... :D

That's the tough thing about these bigger races full of hitters.
That's the thing, there's just so many of those big hitters around these days. Also Zwift races being generally very biased towards power riders, rather than lighter riders...

I took it easy tonight and just did a short one. Got passed by Mrs OMS I think going up Box Hill.
Box hill 'taking is easy'?! Always find that one hard no matter how I climb it. Think it just doesn't suit me - the constant gradient just makes it so much of a drain for me. Climbs with a changing gradient suit me more...

No bad thing, if she can keep up with @One More Solo ! ;)

Just bought a smart trainer, Elite suito and its bloody brutal compared to road riding.
Haha, what are you finding hard? No/very little easy pedalling? Verify your calibration/spindown etc with your trainer. You ride with power outside? It's hard to directly compare - most riders will find themselves with a 'better' FTP outside. Comparing power meter measurements is also a little like comparing Apples and Oranges.

Yup, the group rides are generally harder courses/routes. The race routes did seem to match those 'popular' race routes used, which are generally flat courses. It's a very 'Zwift' thing to do - don't forget the most popular races & series are not organised by Zwift. Some of even the better routes/courses have been suggested by the community before Zwift added them in as such.

Leith hill last night was good fun - a great introduction! Quite glad they chose it over Box (although surprised).

Discovered something had been rubbing against my inner thigh and drawn blood. :o
One way to lower your lactate...! :o ;)

Good work mate , I just did the shorter route this morning (Greatest London Flat). As you say its the usual hard push out of the gate which gets you warmed up and if you want any sort of result you've gotta join in. Settled into a nice group about 50th/350 and felt comfortable at threshold until we hit the rise going out into the countryside. That pushed me over the limit and blew my legs so had to drop off the group , then got caught and passed by the next group as I just couldn't hold the wheels on the long rise. Eventually we got back on the flat and I found that easier going in a small group until the end.

Increased my FTP to 247w and had enough for a moderate sprint at the end.

I think it might have been answered elsewhere....but whats the usual delay from passing a point on zwift to a turbo getting the correct resistance in ERG mode?

On 10sec sprints on zwift, it seems that my turbo (Elite Directo) takes about 5-6 seconds to acknowledge the change and then get to the right resistance. The true amount of time in that sprint/watts is only about 3-4 seconds. I'm trying not to increase cadence leading up to the sprint.

Do newer turbo's change quicker? or is this the same for all of them?

My Direto is the same, it's awful for 10sec bursts, I get the impression it plagues Elite turbos a lot even though generally all ERG turbos suffer to some extent.

Nice bump, so kudos for going that hard! Also it's great to have enough for a sprint, I know I generally do and can catch most (non-sprinter) riders in finishes regardless of how I've ridden the ride/race. Equally I know that effort hurts me, especially when trying to recover/sleep afterwards and the next day commuting I can 'feel' it. So on a ride like the TdZ I generally don't sprint. I'm not at the pointy end of results and much of the time I've ridden reserved earlier so I can finish strongly anyway. On sunday I ramped a little to pass a guy who I'd otherwise have caught after the finish, but with clear air infront and nobody going hard behind that was only a ramp up, no sprint. I save my sprint for real racing, or if it's been a great group, a strong ride where not many have got away and we're still all together - legitimately racing for position! Then I've usually gone so hard the additional fatigue & pain is only minor! :D

Ah that would have been her, she was on a recovery spin.
:D:D:D

They're all different, yet all suffer the same. They all have power curves of applied resistance (so it doesn't feel like hitting a wall), but equally that also means they can't simulate hitting a 'wall' of gradient like we can get outside (and what is required for a short interval).

Reading a review of the Tacx Neo 2, apparently it is brutally fast which actually causes challenges the other way around. :D
The Hammer (H3) is even well known as a great trainer for TrainerRoad because of it's quicker ERG power curve and rapid changes for intervals. DCR mentions it time and again - "However, the one strength of the Hammer series has always been just how darn good it is at ERG mode. If TrainerRoad were ever to acquire a trainer, I’m pretty sure they’d acquire the Saris Hammer series. Seriously. There’s no trainer that works better on TrainerRoad than the H3. Period."

All trainers having a different 'curve' really is another factor why racing is hard and why it's almost impossible to compare riders, races and power on Zwift. My previous Vortex the curve was so 'shallow' I could surge with it, overpowering opponents on any ramps and even in sprints. The trainer just took so long to catch up with me I could stay 'on top' of it. Much like holding cadence and staying on top of a gear while climbing. My Flux is better, too powerful for me to 'overpower' the same, but the power delay from it's power curve means I have to ride harder over the top of climbs else I can get dropped. But does mean I fly at the bottom of climbs and can distance others whose trainers ERG kicks in sooner/stronger/better...

Kudos for even doing the longer ride up Leith Hill , that just didnt float my boat. The next day after my FTP increase on the stage 1 ride I thought i'd have a little go at the stage 1 race.

I'm towards top end of group C but dont push myself to the limits as i've had heart problems and i'm supposed to go max of 150bpm these days. Of course I do go over cos thats what we do :p . Anyhow ended up in the lead group and tried to hang as long as possible even though my legs felt goodish I was blowing up the ramp. Ended up staying with lead group but only had enough for a last 1km ramp up of sorts with no kick left as my HR was up to 160 and didnt feel like killing myself. 9th place for cat C and 3rd on ZP but a pleasant surprise was a back to back FTP increase (up to 255).

Bring on Innsbruck a nice short and sweet stage

Came 24th out of about 100 in Cat C TDZ race this evening.

Recovering from flu last week so did the stage 1 short on Monday at an alright pace then felt good so jumped on the race tonight. Was too far from the front when the main group split and so didn't get in the lead group. Stuck in the second pack all the way which was tough going but managed to take most of them on the sprint.

Average power 297w which was 3.58 w/kg. Enjoyable max HR of 192 on the sprint finish :p

I've got some sort of lingering virus or illness of some kind, I've basically had a cold since September. 2nd round of blood tests ongoing. Doesn't seem to be having a major impact on performance though, maybe I'll find my fitness levels spring up massively once it finally gets sorted! :o

cheers for the comments everyone. I'll just keep doing what im doing and cycle when im told to cycle.
HAha! I'd love that, I seem to have to ask these days, like asking if I've got permission to fill the garage with sweat and grunting...

I try and avoid any 10 second intervals on the vortex for that reason
They're almost impossible on any wheel-on trainer. It's not just the Vortex (although that is particularly bad). It's not much better on Direct Drive, easily the first 3-4 seconds are 'lost' while things try to even out. And then unless you've measured the gear and effort you may need another couple to stabilise the power output. Basically half the interval can be 'off' or lost...

9th place for cat C and 3rd on ZP but a pleasant surprise was a back to back FTP increase (up to 255).
Another great increase! I'm slightly worried now as you've overtaken my current FTP (although overdue a test!) lol ;)

But be careful with the heart stuff, it's well worth speaking to some specialist/professional about it. Depending on the nature of the history/problem they've obviously set a 'limit' for some reason. To regularly be riding at it and above could be very risky, but on the flip side it might actually be really good you're able to comfortably do that.

My dad is really suffering with some arrhythmia now in later life, he's worked physically hard all his life so is finding it really hard to take things easy/rest enough. As it can be hereditary I had myself tested a while back but that was 'inconclusive' and before I got quite fit from all the cycling... Really would be a good idea to get tested again! Although I wear a HRM all the time and have never felt/seen anything odd, it is something I want to be aware of.

Great numbers and result, congrats! Especially when 'ill'!

That virus thing so many people have had 'it' or variations of. It really does seem to linger and resurface time and again... Annoying, bring on the warmer weather! :D

The general guidance is erg is no good for anything less than 30s but newer models may be improving that. I’d use regular mode for sprints etc.

I found this out on my first workout that had 800W sprints in, basically just ground to a halt as I couldn't get it going instantly. Run all structured workouts without ERG now.
