Seems like a Ryzen 3 3200G is about 65% faster. A Ryzen 3600 is about 310% faster.

recently switched from an i7 920 (it had a modest overclock, i think it was @ 3.2ghz) to a 3700x. The same cpu based video encoding task I was doing on the i7 920 is over 4 times faster, maybe 4.5 with a 3700x.

Thank you Joxeon for the link, will see how the 1660 super goes with the 920 and consider the £10 investment!

Tyrlon2 do you have any gaming reflections of the update and do you have a particular GPU and resolution you could share?

I would have thought lack of support for more modern instructions sets, such as AVX, would be a problem as much as anything when running a CPU that old. Project Cars 2 for one runs faster with AVX instructions.

In order to compare against gaming minimum specs and benchmark videos does anyone know what a I7 920 D0 stepping @3.6ghz would be in terms of a more modern intel or amd equivalent please?

To give you a basic idea.
An i7 920d will manage in cinebench r20 a singe core result of 200 and a multicore of 1500.
A default speed ryzen 3600 will manage a single core of 480, and multicore of 3500.
In rough terms.

Tells you all you need to know about level of increase.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Slotted a 1660 super in today and got 45fps on ultra in Red dead 2, 80-90fps with project cars 2 maxed out and 60fps with vsync on very high in arma3 at 1920x1200 - so looking good!

I will have a look at how easy and useful overclocking a Xeon 6 core would be for a tenner, thanks triss for the linkage.

Gaming wise i was mainly playing the division 2 and path of exile on the i7 920, so not the most taxing of games and that was paired with a r9 280 @1080 and 60hz. Honestly, even with that setup I was pretty happy. I changed setup because my motherboard died on me.

New setup is the 3700x paired with a 1660 (not 1660 super - i needed a pc in a bit of a rush and the 1660 super came out a month or so after i had done the build). Monitor is also a new monitor: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus...-gaming-widescreen-led-monitor-mo-09t-as.html still 1080 but 144hz. I won't necessarily get 144fps, depending on the game, but the freesync/gsync compatability helps.

The different setup means it's difficult to compare the two but I'm really happy with it. It's very smooth for games and also for regular stuff like web browsing, excel docs, that kind of thing. The main difference for me is how much of an upgrade the 3700x is over the i7 920 in terms of its cpu power and how that can save me time. For example, I can quite easily play games like the division 2 as normal while video encoding at the same time. Sure, the encoding is a little slower (about 40% slower) while gaming but the experience is smooth, something i couldn't do with the i7 920. So, multitasking is much better with the new setup.

You may find that the i7 920 acts as a bottleneck in relation to the gpu. I found i7 920 cpu usage while gaming to be high. It's much lower with the 3700x, as you might expect.

ps, if you're gaming @1080 or so i think you'll be very happy with the 1660 super :) And, should you decide to upgrade the cpu but continue gaming @1080 for now then you can just reuse that gpu.

@tamzzy - in that video he says he got given an x58 motherboard :(:( Lucky so and so :) If my mother board had been ok it makes perfect sense to switch to a xeon cpu, nice upgrade :). It's the second hand motherboard, if you need one, that's the pain. They can go for over £100 on fleabay, for a 10 year old motherboard, which put me off trying that. That's more expensive than a new tomahawk max board. I was tempted to try one of those cheaper chinese x58 motherboards but the reviews aren't great.

But yeah, purely in terms of gaming performance, a xeon cpu, or even an i7 920 as i had, should still be acceptable.

@Tyrion2 i'm sure if you scoured gumtree enough you'd be able to turn a quick buck...whether the profit is worth the time outlay... :/
tech yes appears to be a computer flipper from what i can see from his channel

Thank you for sharing your experience Tyrion2 and tamzzy for the the video link which was a very interesting watch. Seems like 1080p with these 10 year old bits of kit is still a goer!

I'm running one of these @ 4.4Ghz with 24Gb of 1600Mhz ram and a 1070 @ 3440x1440P 100Hz and there isn't one, modern, multicore game that even stretches the CPU.

It can max out the graphics leaving me GPU limited, with the CPU twiddling its virtual thumbs.

It'll do me until Zen 5000 with DDR5 ram comes out.
