The eternal debate: 1440p or 4k IPS?

The XB321HK (4k 32in IPS) I've been using is finally kaput with panel issues. I have a CZ350CK (35" ultrawide VA) to fall back on, but have realized a) I much prefer IPS and b) ultrawide is just too wide for my desk setup with my studio monitors/speakers. I'm therefore in the market for a new monitor.

Unfortunately, my budget (read: the Mrs.) only goes to around £450 so a 32" 4k IPS replacement is out of reach. I'm looking for either a 27" 1440p or 4k 27" display. So, for £450 what is the best option? 4k or 1440p IPS i.e. higher resolution or faster hz?

I should mention my usage is office work/coding (Excel, Java) and gaming (mostly RPGs, action, strategy e.g. Assassin's Creed, Total War). I run an overclockers ryzen 3600 and a 2080 super.

Consider the one in my sig, £200 IPS 1440p 75mhz 32". It really is a bargain put the saving to something else or towards an affordable 4k IPS 144mhz in 10 years time.

(above - you cant get decent HDR for £400 on a monitor currently)

Is go with 1440 27" 144hzor 32"

Go 4k if

Want a big screen
Not for gaming unless high end rig
Massive screen for gaming a bit ott unless far enough if close up bit daft

Pixels are small enough on 27"

For 4K would would need be sat close or you will not benefit from 4k.

Reason why (apart from that funny old guy meme) monitors are not normally 55" for 2-3feet sitting distance.

I find a 4k too high a resolution and not necessary. I really like 1440 resolution and think that 1440 will be more than enough. As you mention you should get more fps from a 1440 display than a 4k display for the same gpu.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm leaning towards 27" IPS 1440p. I could go to a 4k LG 27UL600, but get the sense I'd get a better gaming experience and featured at 1440p. What then would be my best option, say something with HDR, >60hz and Freesync, for ~£450?

You won't be getting any HDR experience on a monitor of that price - it'll just be a brighter picture, as the colour depth of the panel won't be 10 bit, but rather 8 bit + FRC (frame rate control).

I'd personally go with the Acer one above - you won't really getting any better features for your money. If you can wait, there's the LG GL850 or the 27GL83A-B, which are virtually identical.

Edit: there's also the VG27AQ
