Free software to convert MKV to MP4

Hi All.
I've got a 1.2GB MKV file that I'm looking to convert to MP4.
Every piece of software I find costs money, the free trial either wont support such a large file or, appears to but gives me an MP4 that is only a quarter of the length of the original.
I even looked at online converters - the majority not supporting files of this size.

Is there anything completely free that will do this?
If not, is there anything reasonably priced that will that someone can recommend?

Believe you can convert in vlc player too

ffmpeg if comfortable on the command line otherwise Handbrake which I think is using ffmpeg under the hood anyway.

Try mkvtoolnix mkvmerge first - i think this can do MP4 and MKV.

The underlying video and audio streams may not need re encoding, just repackaging.

AVIDemux has worked wonders for changing .ts files to .mp4 for me ... very very fast too if you're not re-encoding.

i usually just change the extension from .mp4 to .mkv and vice versa seems to work for me

Handbrake is what most people seem to scream about but I personally dont like it.
I do use it however, I just dont like its interface.

I mostly use Format Factory or Bigasoft Video Converter
