I must admit that i've felt the same every time i've heard 2m or 70cm , it seems to be full of people that just want to talk about Ham radio and very little else.
Or that the wife's hip is playing up again and the Farmer Giles aren't so good :D

I'm no expert but PMR446 is usually pretty short range and probably not much in the way of repeaters, etc. either so you won't pickup much on that unless the very local area is busy.

Very short range, probably a kilometre tops with clear line of sight. Some shopping centres used to use them to co-ordinate security.

I have some 5W VHF handsets and they are only reliable to around 1500 metres across my hilly and wooded property.

Thanks for the advice chaps, much appreciated.
Yaesu FTDX-3000 now ordered ... hurrah :)

My mate has a FTDX-3000 and tends to use it more than the other radios he has available to him. He has a IC7300 too but prefers the ergonomics of the FTDX-3000 :), I'm sure you'll have fun when it arrives.
