New graphics card in older motherboard?

Hello,

Long time no see!

Basically I'd like to extend the life a bit longer of an older AM3+ based system (FX8350 CPU) with a 990FX chipset by upgrading the graphics card.

I'm considering an AMD RX590 or similar. Other suggestions are welcome

As the motherboard only has PCIe 2.0 my question is whether this will limit a PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 card? I'm sure I read somewhere that in the real world the performance difference won't be much.

Thanks in advance for replies.

I used to use a R9 390 8gb on an x58 mobo for a number of years without any issues (played division 1 + 2, Diablo 3 etc) and upgraded over a year ago to a z390 mobo and 9700k with 16gb of ram and didn’t notice any difference.

what ress are you using and what games do you play?

Brother uses a 580 on an fx8350 system, card performs as it should on games where it's not cpu limited. Being cpu limited by the 8350 in certain games is more of an issue than being pci 2.0.

Kind of what I guessed, that the CPU will be more the limiting factor.

Will probably go the way of an RX580/590.

Best to google for any issues on your particular board with the type of GPu you plan on getting to see if others have had problems.
As others have said your bios might hold you back , but it would probably work fine.

I had similar trepidation's about getting a 2070 super in an old x58 board with a Xenon 5650, but in the end it all works fine.
