Block and head work is done on the 1.6 turbo in my veloster.

Block has been slightly bored out for the new pistons (slight tweak from 77 to 77.5mm)

Refreshed the basics while at it too.

The early veloster turbo engines are known for having a weak rod problem of you play with them at all. So I decided to get a forged internals kit installed.

Turns out I was very well timed.

Here is the kit:

I bent a rod on a rover turbo with a forged 2.1 by a similar amount, although i did crack a ring land too.

Too much boost :D

Doing it yourself?

Do you need undersize piston rings or how does it work with a wider bore?

It's a poor show in this day and age having weak connecting rods is it not?

The skinnyness of the rods in a modern 2.0L or less turbocharged performance engine scare me. No wonder so many of them explode if you do anything other than basic bolt ons.

Yeah that was good timing for sure! Sure the upgrade will be worthwhile once you start throwing more boost at it, if that's the plan anyway!

No, not myself way too much of noob and no equipment. Got a professional doing it. New forged pistons are slightly wider hence the rebore.

They fixed it in 2014, so the newer 1.6 turbo engines have much stronger rods.

Wow that was lucky, what kind of boost was it running to bend the rod?

I don't know anything about these engines, what power do they run stock and what are you aiming for after this?

UK 1.6 is (all figures for crank) 187 rated (US is 201), mine was 175 on the Dyno I was on, went up to about 220.

With the new pistons, intercooler, intake and exhaust I'm hoping for 275-300 on 99 ron. But we will see where it is comfortable.

Stock boost is around 14 psi, I was at 16-17 and probably looking at over 20psi.

have the valve guides been cut down or are they that short as standard?

3 angle valve seat looks nice, you sticking with standard valves?

what weight change are you seeing with the internals?

sorry for all the questions, I love a good engine build

Standard valves but worked on a bit.

Before any work (these two valves were replaced).

Weights are not changing too much as this was more for strength.
