I'm a transport planner and I work at a multinational engineering firm. I do quite a range of things
I do studies into travel habits and problems for a study area and from this data prepare improved concept designs for interchanges, new junctions, public realm areas etc and then the real engineers take over and have to design it properly.
I assess the feasibility and impact of new developments (usually housing) both on behalf of developers and on behalf of the council (not Southampton where I live) which itself covers a very wide range of thing from highway capacity assessments to AutoCAD vehicle swept path analysis
I do public and stakeholder consultations and get shouted at by everyone
To be honest I'm not doing this stuff as much nowadays and more of my time is spent on project management really
Pros:
Wide variety of work
Generally everyone who is in the industry wants to be an industry because no one wakes up and thinks "I can't get that job I want I guess I'll just become a transport planner"
Cons:
It's probably one of the lowest paid specialisms in the planning / masterplanning / architecture industry
I have to do planning committees
Everyone hates us whenever we design anything

IT Operations Manager at an SME.
Been there for almost 20 years, started as an IT assistant and now lead my own team reporting to the COO.
Within the next 5 years I’d like to start my own consultancy.

I am a mechanical certification engineer for the aircraft interiors industry.
Pros:
Rewarding enforcing and developing safety standards
Get to break stuff
Wide variety of work; between riding technical documents, travelling to meet customers, attend meetings and setting up testing it stays interesting
Cons:
Difficult progression. Need loads of experience to rise and even then, not a lot of companies in the UK that I could go to.
We are the last piece of the puzzle, testing and compliance is always last, and guess what? Projects are always late and we get shouted at!

Senior Infrastructure Engineer - primarily a VMware/Storage specialist these days, but still get involved in Cloud, Apps and other random facets of IT when the need arises. Currently working for a great MSP which is rare, and this is the second good one I have worked with. We're more focused on being a Service Provider these days though. Great pay, the hours are long, but that is mostly by choice and I have never been turned down when I submit my overtime so absolutely milking it whilst I still have the stamina to go.

Second in the kitchen, work the saute station, prep, design dishes, do ordering, rota etc.
Pros:
- Every day is different, get to be creative.
- Get to do something I enjoy and it's always changing.
- Good work colleagues. I get to work with a wide range of people from various backgrounds.
Cons:
- Physically difficult, 10-14 hour shifts, 60+ hour weeks, cuts, burns etc.
- Poor pay.

Verification Engineer (title doesn’t explain much).
The company I work for designs and licenses semiconductor IP to manufacturers. I specifically work on GPUs. The best way to explain my job is like this. Imagine you want to build a lot of houses, but you don’t want to design it because it has to adhere to so many standards and what not and you don’t want to be liable. So you hire an architect to design them for you. You buy their design and build your houses. Now considering you’re going to be building a lot of these, and fixing faults after they’ve already been built is going to be expensive. You’re going to want some assurance that the design works and does what it should. That’s basically my job. Except it’s GPU designs being licensed to smartphone/tablet manufacturers. My job is to make sure the GPU (or at least a part of it) does what it should before it’s manufactured. And to provide enough evidence to the purchaser of the license that it does do what it should so that they feel comfortable buying it. You can’t fix silicon that’s got a bug in it if it’s already out there in thousands of devices already.

I work for a fairly large bank and I've been doing Procurement for 20+ years.
Pros:
- I have a great team.
- I enjoy my job and I'm good at it. These two things are not unrelated.
- Financial perks working in any financial sector tend to be generous, over and above salary. We get 6 weeks holiday, discounted mortgage rates, card fees waived, premium account support and a ton of other things I won't bore you with.
Cons:
- Banking is a risk averse industry which can be challenging when the risk appetite is low.
- Large corporations tend to be slow to act and have a lot of red tape.
- Time for a new industry at some point; I've been doing FS for 8 years and miss the rush of retail buying/cat manager work. Might be time to spruce up the CV.

I retired then started a uni course, just passed the other day

Pros:
I like working with my team to come up with good, simple and sustainable solutions that make customers' experience with us better.
Love seeing how those solutions in the end make the company a lot of money, and get great feedback from customers.

I'm currently caring for my granny with alzheimers and my grandma with dementia. I love them greatly and like doing it. But it isnt that social as my old it job. Office bants.
