You're right I'm sure that happens a lot. I think I've been lucky to not work in that type of environment and I wouldn't want it in my company. My guess is such behaviour is just the tip of a toxic work environment culture. It's a funny thing that so many senior people don't get right. Start with trust by default with your staff, lead by example with those values from the top of the tree and you have a much happier workforce. And a much happier workforce is not only good for their well being and satisfaction but it tends to yield better results for the company - it's not entirely a selfless virtue.
