Cost of new key

Thinking about buying a used VW Passat. Its a 66 plate 2.0 tdi but the trader only has 1 key.

What is the best/cheapest way of getting hold of a replacement 2nd key? I’m thinking avoid main dealer!

Ask them to provide a second key.

No chance I'd buy a car with 1 key.

When my wife lost one of her keys. We had a Renault specialist code two blank virgin keys off ebay. They also made it so the older keys would not longer work.

You'll probably need to go to a franchise dealer for a new key. They will re-program both keys so any other keys out there wont work.

Get the cost of the key off the price of the car.

you need to ask the dealer for a new one "providing" they can disable the old one, otherwise, dont buy it, as said, another key out there for that car

local mobile locksmiths will be able to sort you out quite easily.

i bought a pug 207 with one key had too go to the main dealer too sort another the local indies couldn't do it (another lesson learnt) , think it cost me £140 all in proper robbery the lad jumped in the car with some chunky looking laptop device took a couple of mins too programme the spare key.

Almost every car out there for sale which is more than 3 or 4 years old will have at least one key missing. And even if a car comes with the original number of keys, you still don't know if they are all original ones, or if one has been lost and another made to replace it.

My primary concern with having just one key isn't "what if the person with the other key somehow finds the car and decides to steal it" because the chances of that happening are almost zero. My primary concern is what I'm going to do if I lose my one and only key.

I remember that with some manufacturers, a 2nd key was an optional extra. Sneaky money maker if you don't have it added 'for free'.
Not seen that practice for some time though fortunately.

I hand my car back next week after 3 years and I still have the 2nd key (never been used).

Really, some cars only come with 1 key these days? I thought two keys plus a valet key was the standard. Some manufacturers used to go even further than that, my Lexus had three keys, a valet key, and a "card" key.

You can sometimes program blank keys yourself. A few keyless cars get stolen like that :/

If you can find a cheap scan tool(clone) you can buy a key/fob off eBay, program the key yourself then sell the scan tool. I did this before saved me hundreds of £.

If you want help I can try and find a scan tool that programs keys.

You will need to buy the pin code from the dealer for this or there are other ways to extract the pin from the ECU.

My last 2 cars were at least 10 years old and still had both keys (granted they were 911s), my current car is 13 plate and has both and my wife's focus is 62 plate and has both. I don't think most are missing, I'm not sure how you'd even loose a car key mainly due to how much they can cost.

Id say your experience is probably the exception. But also, we are probably the exception. Or maybe I just end up with cars with fewer keys because they are usually 15+ years old.

Some people clearly find it easy to lose keys.

I've never bought a car with a missing key or lost one for one I've owned in 25+ years. Same for the close family/friends. Someone broke into my sisters house to steal the keys to take her car, but that doesn't really count...

Out of 14 cars I have only owned 2 which have had a single key!

The Celsior (particularly funny because it would originally have had 5), and now the Primera...

Same here too - every car I have ever had has come with two keys, the only exception was the first car I ever had, a 15 year old Fiat Uno that I paid about £60 quid for as a non-runner when I was 17.

Lol just the one - was a skint teenager who had just learnt to drive - ended up putting a reconditioned engine in with my dad and got it running - lasted me a year until I moved onto something better.
