hi all im laying a drive for the first time and I'm a total diy noob.

That said we've dugout 20cm deep ready to lay 15cm of sub layer. Now all the guides etc say use MOT 1 , which i understand is 40mm down to dust but is NON permeable.

Some places mention MOT 3 which is permeable - but try finding MOT 3 at any aggregate seller, its like good dust. Most haven't heard of it, so they say...only found 1 place but they want £108 per ton...with MOT 1 being like £30 per ton..

So what do people use? Mot1? Limestone 20mm?

Budget conscious but also want to do it right!

MOT1 is permeable.

Type 1

think you’re confusing permeability

Most sites say it isn't when compacted?

If you're worried about it, mix MOT1 with sand, 50-50 and it'll help with the water drainage and still provide a good solid surface.

The reason MOT1 is recommended is because you're going to sticking 1+ tonne vehicles on it and it needs to be solid.

The big question is, what are you putting on the top?

What’s t he reason for worrying about permeability? Type 1 is used in 99% of applications with no issues.

What are you putting on top of the sub-base? If it's something like tarmac, which isn't permeable, then why would it matter if the sub-base was / wasn't?

The plan is:

Dig 20cm down - check
Lay 12-15cm of sub base - mot1/3
Install vubagrid/other brand plastic things 40mm deep with 6mm shingle in
Top layer resin bound

Put car on top:)
