Time for car insurance renewal, and just wandering what you all guys are using. Is it best to go through the usual comparison websites, or to go through a particular website? The insurance is needed, for a single car policy. Many thanks.

I tend to use Confused as a general comparison, maybe a direct quote with someone like Direct Line just in case, then direct quotes with the top 2 or 3 from confused.

The last time though I found it ended up being chepeast buying via confused, and they had the £20 dominos voucher as well!

I usually use specialist performance car brokers, but this year comparison sites were massively cheaper for some reason.

What type of car? I use the standard firms on t'internet for my skoda but a specialist for my caterham (Adrian Flux).

Renewal this year was painful as my wife crashed my car on my policy last year.

I tried a few when I was getting quotes for my Clio last week.

I usually start off with compare the market to get me a ballpark figure. Then I went directline, and a few performance oriented insurers, just in case they were ok. I insured it last year with a more performance oriented insurer in case I modified it, but I didn't, so don't feel the need to pay that extra money this year (was an extra £100 last year vs cheapest option, this year I'm closer to £200 less than the renewal).

In the end, I got an excellent quote through Quidco's insurance comparison thing. Ended up with Hastings, who I have a couple other insurance policies with anyway. And apparently get £35 cashback too. In the end, less than £200 to insure a Clio 197 F1 with only 1 year NCD for this car. Mental. But then I am quite old at 41.

I've been with the current insurer for a few years now, each year I bang the details into confused and a few companies come out cheaper than the renewal price, I then ring up the firm I'm with and ask if they can do anything on price, they normally say that there is a loyality discount showing as available, click a few buttons and they give me a new price thats maybe not quite as good as the cheapest on the comparison site, but not far off and better than the majority on the list. I then generally tell them to go ahead, as there is probably only £10-£15 quid more I could save for going somewhere else, probably worse customer service and maybe a lower level of cover if I did go elsewhere, and I'd have to get the NCB and send it off to them, after going through the whole quote again and finding its more like £5 cheaper because the comparison site made some assumptions in the data it passed to their API...

Wondering what my upcoming renewals are going to be like - previously they've been competitive while not quite the cheapest they have a better online system and CS than most so I'd rather stick with them but they have a habit of after a few years suddenly jacking the price up by like 300% and unable to move much on it which is ridiculous. Last couple of renewals were very slightly less than the year before so that was good.

EDIT: Sadly I've never yet found comparison sites get me a better deal than using them to find the cheapest (that are "reputable" relatively speaking) and then trying them directly which is usually around 10% cheaper :s

I used Adrian Flux for more specialist things, or high performance. They're generally untouchable for me, because they broker it out to smaller companies wishing to take on the risk. I'm technically insured by some small place in Wales which specialise in things like limos and celebrity insurance. Otherwise I have found direct line very good, and cheaper if you have multiple cars insured with them within the household or even different houses within the family.

I used to this with Directline but this year they said there was no movement on price at all so I moved to Ageas who I’d never heard of before but apparently they’re huge in Belgium and on the continent. £20 a month cheaper too. Had no real issues with DL but couldn’t turn down £240 a year cheaper.

Comparison site to see who comes out cheapest, then quidco/topcashback direct with that company or meerkat if you can take advantage of their offers.

Broker tried to increase my quote from £400 to £1200 but offered to reduce it if I could prove to them the quote was excessive, a bank statement showing I paid them £400 2 years ago and nothing had changed wasn't good enough. Went elsewhere for less than £300 instead.

Compare the market normally for both cars though my Halifax bank app had an advert for their car insurance with 40 quid voucher, got a quote and they were actually cheaper than anything on the comparison sites.
While I had the impreza I used Greenlight insurance, Tony is a decent guy though you need to call them to get a quote as there are several models they wont cover.

I always use a comparison site to check roughly and then go direct to the cheaper ones (also do a quote with Direct Line as well), when you are going to a company though always check top cashback etc. as some have good deals on and can make quotes that don't look great at first be really competitive.

I've been with Elephant for about 15 years. Every year, I receive the renewal, phone them up to request "best price", which usually knocks about £30 off, then use price comparison sites and find nothing is within about £20 of them (most much, much higher).

Was only £150 this year. About 5 years ago it was £113! (realise the nature of insurance means these figures mean nothing to anyone, really, but just illustrating it seems pretty cheap)

Just tried Confused on my upcoming car, same details as I used directly with Admiral (when I did the quote last week) and it's almost £150 cheaper?!

That's surprisingly normal. You'd think that they'd give the best prices direct since they don't have to pay a cut to a third party, but I think they just figure that anyone who still rings insurance companies direct to get quotes is probably a sucker. Also I think their contract with Confused prevents them from offering cheaper prices direct? Not sure.

I don't know how the insurance market got so bad in the UK. I find it strange not having to chase the cheapest deal each year or get ripped off now I'm in Germany. It's just not a thing here.
