It’s not the quickest , newest or highest spec Carrera GT or 911 Turbo but it’s mine all paid for and as a weekend toy I’m very very happy .

They're amazing, nice one. So much fun and so much value. I miss mine enormously and it's only been gone a few weeks. The 997 that replaced it is very different but certainly not a better or more fun car, only highlights just how good the 987 is.

I am looking about at older boxters, roughly 05/06 age. What engine or model do I need to stay away from, 986, 987? Going to be stored over the winter time and used for a runaround in summer.

2.7 is the reliable choice with little ims, rms, bore scoring you hear from all the other engine options aroun that time and before/after. Be a good time to buy in a month or two when people get rid after a summer of Fun.

05/06 puts you into 987 model years. They use the same engine as the 986 broadly speaking (same weak spots). The facelift 987 from 2009 onwards did away with the IMS. I think 2006 also increased the capacity of the S from 3.2 to 3.4L. The 3.4 goes very well indeed!

Overall it would seem that the lower capacity engines don’t suffer as much with bore scoring. The 3.8 in the 997 911 is the worst affected, but overall numbers are low. The RMS is a seal which can be replaced (but obviously costs money). The IMS is a long debated subject, but I would suggest that if a car has done plenty of miles without trouble up until now, you’re less likely to have a future problem. IMS failure is pretty catastrophic! Early and late cars are in theory better for IMS failure.

The long and short of it is that they have been badmouthed so much online due to their terribly unreliable engines that they’ve become cheap to buy. Which is good if you’re in the market for one. The online moaning would appear to grossly exaggerate the magnitude of the problem. Obviously if you are the one person that catastrophic IMS failure happens to in your pride and joy then you’re going to be very upset about it!

The future of these cars is going to be interesting as the cost of rebuilding the engines is going to far outstrip their value shortly, which might make them quite rare in a few years. Although, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of them on the road right now.

What’s your budget?

If it were me, I’d be buying the best 986 that I could get my hands on. I do like the facelift 2002 model, but the 2000 shape is growing on me.

Another option for depreciation free and reliable convertible motoring is the S2000. Not quite as good value as they were, but there are a couple of smart looking cars on PistonHeads at the moment. Probably about the same price as a 996 or early 997 Boxster S. Extremely good to drive and worth a look. Still miss mine!

This 986 looks nice on the outside, but I’d like to know what “good service history” means.

There’s certainly more choice in earlier boxsters.

That one is nice looking and seems to have been cherished.

Buy with your eyes open. Ignore mileage and go for a car which has been with the same owner for a long time and with a large service history. Anything other than matching premium tyres on each axle should make you run a mile.
