Now is not a good time no one should do anything until Ampere and Zen 3 which are all due in 2020. If my damm 4770k can last anyones can lmao but im still going strong with my 2080ti i get mins of 144 in L4D up to 260fps which seems to be my hardcap on my 280hz monitor.

4k is the same story, I even managed to use my usual downsampling tricks to run wow classic at 5k on this and it mostly stayed around 120fps. So really your GPU seems to be the weakspot at the minute not the system but it is getting long in tooth and claw as well.

Same question as before now we have a bit more info on the new Nvidia cards. Appreciate there are no benchmarks yet - if I go for a RTX 3080 (assuming I can actually get one) will my system hold it back at 1440p?

Somewhat by how much who knows until benchmarks arise, but the 3080 should smash 1440p.

1080ti v 2080ti is 20% performance increase so if we say that the 3080 is gonna be another 20% min your looking at least a 40% increase from your 1080ti.

Thanks for the response.

Having had another look at this, at gpucheck.com comparing the 4790k to a 3800x with a 2080ti in each case, running COD MW there is apparently a difference of only around 10fps between the two at my resolution. So much as I'm gritting my teeth as I'm typing this, it looks like I can still enjoy the improved performance as well as the ray traced graphics of new titles with a 3080 in my system without upgrading the rest of it for the moment - or at least waiting to see what Zen 3 brings to the table.

Indeed - I'm interested in an FE card but its not particularly clear at what time on the 17th orders can be placed (for an actual card or if its just a pre-order) or if you need to wait for an email if you've registered interest (which I obviously have). At least its crystal clear on here as times have been posted on when the pre-ordering goes live.

The 1080 is still great for gaming but I'd replace that PSU. I always replace my PSU whenever the warranty runs out (every 10 years for most decent brands). It's not worth the risk

I still think most stuff is good for most people tbg, i put together a machine from an old dell optiplex (4th gen intel), slapped in an ssd and an rx580 (spare card), and the thing is a great 1080p gaming machine. Which is what he was looking for.

Think its the cost part, a good 4k monitor aint cheep, the 2080ti style card just got a lot more affordable and the 3070 is drool worthy, but im kidding myself if i think i can afford double my mortgage on a gpu (the missus would string me up for the insurance money lol)

Your machines pretty nice, and seems to do what u need :), get them forum dealz for upgrades lol

I was shocked to see them have such long warranty's, had been a while since i bought my last one, this time round got a seasonic, and it came with 5 years, Just wish i had seen the tier list before buying, but it does the job

Here is an interesting benchmark comparison, not sure how this can exist yet, but we have -

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti vs NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 with Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.00GHz

and

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti vs NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 with AMD Ryzen 7 3800X

Loads of games to see, but according to this, at my resolution of w1440p with ultra quality settings it looks like upgrading to the Ryzen from a 4790K will get an improvement of about 10fps with a 3080.

As I say not sure how this can exist yet and is possibly just speculation.

Most Intel's now run at 5.1ghz across 6 cores easily and 5.3ghz across 10 .

Wait till 14th and should see at least. i7 4 cores still used a lot in bench marks along with newer CPUs but often running at 4.5ghz
