as per title really, looking to sell our home and Foxtons is charging a whopping 2.5% + VAT as a fee

The next closest estate agent is 1.5% + VAT

Foxtons are claiming that they have the ability to get us our asking price through cross-selling in their network (and within the timeframe we want i.e. the next 6 weeks) but that could be hogwash just to get us to sign with them. To be fair, it is a pricey house (650-750k) and the next best estimate from agents has been about 50k less.

Any experience with Foxtons from other peeps here and did they live up to their promise of finding that "premium" buyer? Or should I just list it on purple bricks and save the $$

I have no experience but that is an insane amount of commission to pay an estate agent. I paid 1% 2 years ago when I sold a property in Reading and that was with a bricks and mortar agent with several brands across Berkshire and Oxfordshire.

Personally I would list it on Purple Bricks or other cheaper platform and see what happens. There is a lot of rubbish spouted by estate agents regarding their 'lists of potential buyers'. Anyone who is looking for a house in your price range and area will find it on the web and then the negotiation can begin.

In all our house sales the estate agents have been pretty useless really, except Savills, who were excellent when we were selling our last house (but it was a specialist country house sale.)

Foxtons sold my flat in London in 2015. I hated using them, but they got it sold when other agents failed.

They don't negotiate on the fee either which is odd but there you have it.

I would not use purple bricks again, they were crappy and after months got me a whole 1 viewing. Went with a traditional agent after them.

Not a chance I would pay that. Unless your property is extremely niche and needs a hard sell, I can't see what one estate agent offers over another in reality.

We paid £600 to sell our house via house network in 2018. They were useless but all I needed them for was zoopla / rightmove adverts, pictures and arranging viewings. I can't see what paying an extra £2k on your average £200k property would get you with Foxtons but I certainly cant see it as value for money.

Minis!!!!

Maybe make them an offer, tell them if they can sell it at asking within 6 weeks they can have 2.5% if not then they can have 1%.

I really, really doubt they will. They don't want to reduce their value. They generally do get you more money though so often offsets the higher fee. My flat they got me £257k for in 2015. I've just seen it's up for sale with them again right now for £335k! One bed ex local authority, but it is in SW19 just off Parkside so...
