I have had my Netgear XR500 for around a year so now. Just looking to see what is out there with parental control features. I tried on the Netgear but wouldn't block sites, just for when the family have kids over.

Also I would prefer newer tech which is another reason to upgrade. Paid around £250 for this so looking around the £200 mark but less is welcome!

Did have my eyes on these two

Open to suggestions.

Should note we have a desktop downstairs, tablet, 2-3 phones when family are here, mostly used all at the same time and we do stream Netflix and Amazon a lot.

Does your ISP not offer something? Many do. If not, why not do it at a DNS level rather than the router level? It seems like a lot of trouble to go to when it’s reasonably easy to bypass just for when the kids are over?

Some Asus routers have something called AiProtection. This uses a company called Trend Micro to process every site they visit and prohibit them if they visit one that breaks your rules. You can specify which devices and also what times the rules apply, so can be used to prohibit certain content, sites, activities and or even just stop them using the net after a certain time of day.

I’m going to suggest you have a look at Untangle. The free version does everything you want but the £35/year home version does it a bit better. You will need to either buy one of Untangle’s appliances or run it in a NUC or equivalent but it’s just SO much better than most other offerings. You can configure it so you can see when a user attempts to access a blocked site or attempts access out of hours, and which device they’re using to do it. The built-in metrics are also very detailed so, for example, if you want to only allow 60 minutes of gaming per day, you can set that up from the interface on a device by device basis. And unlike most other firewall products it looks for hacking out as well as hacking in. Because quite often users are smarter than we think they are!

I have a Unifi setup, would an Untangle appliance replace my USG?
