4 months after the hire and 1,700 miles later, the assessor reports shows the following damage ;

Snip

Somethings not quite adding up here.

The vehicle in those photos is clearly not in a drivable condition, so how have they added 1700 miles to the clock.

The check in report which i mentioned details the damage when it was returned to thrify.

So if the damages in your check in report don't match what the assessor has reported, then this is what you can challenge - showing them the check-in report.

It sounds to me as though the vehicle was fairly badly damaged by the ex-employee, you've got a list of damages from your check-in report. Since then the vehicle has driven another 1700 miles in 4 months and sustained even further damages which Thrifty are trying to get you to pay for.

Aren't those images current, as in after the 1,700 miles? As you say, sounds like they had an accident 4 months after return and trying to claw back based on the fact the car was returned with some damage in the first place. The fact you have photos of the car's condition when returned which don't match their photos 4 months in, and it's done 1,700 miles more surely removes any liability for this? Unless Bounce's company returned it knowing it had more hidden damage and Thrifty are playing the game..

Yes the assessor report show what the vehicle is now 4 months after we had rented it and 1,700 miles later.

AFAIK they have to prove that you caused the damage, if it's been driven 1700 miles since you returned it - it contradicts their opinion that it wasn't roadworthy, and the pictures they've taken clearly show different damage to the pictures at the start of the thread, so something is amiss.

At the end of the day, if you can prove that damage wasn't there when you returned it (via the photos) it shouldn't be difficult to argue, but it depends how persistent that are - might be worth speaking to a professional. I suspect this would get nowhere if they tried to collect this via a court. (if what you're saying is 100% the truth, of course <I have no reason to believe it isn't> )

I have disputed the claim on the following grounds ;
  • The amount of time lapsed from pick up to inspection report (Pick up was on the 19th May 2020) Independent Inspection report was carried out on the 18th August 2020). A total of 3 months have lapsed since the vehicle was picked up, for all we know the damage could have occurred during these 3 months it wasn’t in our possession.
  • The photographs in the independent report show the grille removed, which indicate that someone has removed/tampered with the vehicle. The grille was intact when it was collected, the photographs from the initial pickup shows this.
  • Protection system fault shows on the independent report, but no mention of the fault on the initial inspection. It would be clear to anyone collecting the vehicle to mention this on the initial inspection
  • Mileage on check in report shows 10,925 independent report shows 12,646 , difference of 1,721 miles. Its clear from this that the car has been driven a substantial way since being collected from us.

Email them saying thankyou for providing proof that this damage occured after my rental ended. I dont expect to hear any more from this, but if you insist then do it through the courts

Basically this,

At the end of the day - if you don't pay, their only recourse is to take you to court, they'll only do that if they're 110% sure they're going to win and everything is 100% in order, clearly lots of things are amiss - I don't think they'll go via that route, although they may harass you, send all manner of threatening letters in the hope you'll cave in, but I imagine that's as far as they'll take it.

possibly someone in Thrifty admin has matched the wrong hire to this, the original hire may be showing on the system and the operator has linked this 1700 mile later damage to the incorrect hire.

Sounds like some sort of admin error based on the series of events we've seen here.

Yep those are some good grounds to dispute on.

Seem like very reasonable grounds. They are trying it on for sure.

They aren't really though are they. 90% of that damage is highlighted in the original report.

The grille might have just been removed to inspect the front properly.

They've been stupid in driving it another 1700 miles.

It wouldnt seem to line up with the photos of the original damage

Mile is a difficult one, not roadworthy when they have other vehicels and want to penalise a customer is different to not roadworthy if a customer walks in and they desperatekly need a car though ;)

The grill being the sort of part they are is likely to be grabbed off a damged motor if they need one to fix just the grill on a second car.
The area the vehicle in is interesting, could be some sort of central damaged vehicle area, those sorts of plaes are rife for employees do things and using things they shouldnt

It looks a little like the those odd plastic bits could be part of the boot trim, if its had a rear shut its possible they are damaged and been pulled off to demostrate like the piece of expanded poly above, which will typcially be in teh wheel well type area of course

Door damage, bonnet damage, cracked grille, sump guard damage, bumper damage.

Which of that is the OP gonna dispute as the check in report/photos show all that?

Only way to get out of this is a technicality because they've driven it another 1700 miles and taken so long.
