Hi all,

So I am finally thinking about upgrading my graphics card. I am looking at getting a 3080 of some description.

I currently have the bellow spec pc I built at the end of 16/ Jan 2017. I have seen a few posts regarding combining a 3080 with older processer and possible bottlenecks. I am running an Acer predator x34A 3400x1440 34” screen. Ive read that running a 1440P screen is advantageous.

Spec:
Gtx 1070
Asus Z170 motherboard (socket 1151)
Intel core i7-6700K
16GB ram at 3000mHz

If I could get away with a new 3080 without too many issues I would be looking upgrading the rest of my rig next year. I am not an expert at all so any help would be great.

Thank you,

I've done a fair bit of research on this as I'm planning to throw a 3080 into my i7 5930k x99 rig. It's getting on a bit now but with 6 cores and 12 threads overclocked to 4.4Ghz it should be totally fine for what I want (I too game on a x34 monitor, but also game at 4k 60).
I think you'll be ok with a 6700k at 3440x1440 (as in you won't be 'bottlenecked' much, especially if you overclock it.)

Don't get too hung up on 'bottlenecking' either - it only really applies to people who game at 1080p and want really high refresh rates/ fps (144Hz / 144fps and above). It's basically "oh my god, I'm only getting 178fps, if I upgrade my cpu I'll get 210fps". Unless you're an esports gamer it's not an issue.

I had a 144hz 1080p monitor back in the day but would take higher resolution and clarity any day now. 100Hz of the x34 is plenty for me now, and 4k 60Hz on an OLED TV is really nice and smooth with less motion blur anyway.

sure if you plan on upgrading you'll get away with it but.....4c8t cpus are on the way out. get yourself a 4700x/4900x and an x570 board (or intel equivalent) asap and you're good for the next 3-5 years

I'll put it this way. would you advise anybody to pair a £700+ GPU with a £100 CPU (i3 10100/3300x)? I don't think you would as that's essentially what a 6700k/7700k is in 2020

I have a 5820K @ 4.6 GHz, do you think that will be ok for RTX 3080/6900xt @ 1440p 144/165hz? I am trying to delay my CPU upgrade until AM5 Zen 4 or alder lake hits the market when DDR5, PCI5, USB 4 will make it to the mainstream platforms.

At that res, you'll be fine. That's more than 1440P, but not quite 4K. At 4K, there's 1-5% difference between a 6700k and a 10900k.

I want to upgrade my CPU, but the brand new platforms from both AMD and Intel are here next year, which will bring a new socket (AM5 for AMD, and LGA1700 for Intel), DDR5, USB4, possibly even PCIE-v5, and other goodies. The Intel platform especially, with the Alder Lake architecture, is likely to be a big deal. That's where my money is going!

Lo bud. Given that the 5820k is basically the same as my 5930k (apart from having fewer PCIe lanes) and the fact you're at a higher 4.6Ghz, then you're in pretty good shape.

However, if you are actually wanting/ needing to be hitting 150fps+ in the games you play - this is where these older CPU's will start to bottleneck a bit. If you didn't want/ need to be at such a high framerate (even though you have a panel to show it off) then in reality it's not an issue.

It's all a balancing act really of wants and expectations. For the moment I'm happy with 100Hz/ up to 100fps on my 3440x1440 x34 monitor, and 60fps on a 4k OLED - a 5930k at 4.4Ghz should have the grunt to push this.

I'm sticking a 3080 in with my 4790k in full knowledge I will be gimped. Looking around it could be 30% down on frames vs a new cpu, but it's still going to be double what I've got now.

Going to take a look when Zen 3 is out. Don't think I could hold out much longer. There's always something new, if I want DDR 5 etc in a couple of years I'll sell the Zen 3 and upgrade at the time.

Upgrade when your PC isn't performing as you want it to. That's where I am currently. I want to hit 144+ at 1440p consistently with high graphics settings.

My 3080 arrives on Monday so will have a good idea how it runs.

Yeah im in the same boat, 5820K on a 1440p monitor looking to get 120fps, think we should be okay for most games for a while. Coming from a 1070 even if im losing a few frames its still going to be a hell of an upgrade.

Sounds good please let me know how it goes. I am the edge whether to buy 3070 or 3080 for 1440p.

I am mainly playing warzone atm. My cpu time is around 6-10ms (1000/6=160fps 1000/10= 100+ fps) Only an overclocked 10900K gets 4-6 ms. even the 3900xt gets 5-8ms. My only upgrade options for 3080 are the 10850K (dont really want a pcie 3 platform despite the gaming performance) and Zen 3. The problem with zen 3 is, its most likely going to be the last platform before zen 4 am5 platform. Depending on whether i can bare with it, I may have to buy zen3, ideally would like to wait for zen 4 and buy a 8/12 cores, and later on purchase a 12/16 core when zen 5/6 hits the market to get maximum longetivity out of the platform.

I guess a 3070 will be sufficient for me in warzone for my current GPU, but playing single player games on 1440p Ultra 3080 may show benefits.

4090 on 850w = BOOM
My problem I find with 7700k and 2080ti is that when I'm playing a game that uses nearly 100% of the CPU like Odyssey in 120hz 1440p I run out cores for hardware streaming YouTube on the other monitor and the video stutters and goes low res. Simply put if you wish to do anything that needs a spare 1% CPU in the background it's going to suck on a 4 core 8 thread cpu with a lot of new games. Project cars 3 is another one that tanks my multimedia when under heavy load.

Thank you,

I have an almost identical system to you.

Currently have the 3080 on order with OcUK but due to the wait times I pondered on buying a full new system. Luckily due to the advice from this forum I too am going to wait for next year’s Intel offering.

Maybe get the 3080 when you can, and upgrade the 6700k in the coming months. It's still a decent CPU and you'll maximise any performance available to you that way. That's my own plan anyway.
