Please guys if you can help it, don't buy into the accessorising your quest and modding it. It turns a very good for value money product into an overpriced piece of trash in relative terms compared to what else you could get for your money (a G2).

The smart man gets:
Quest 2 64GB for £299
Amazon USB C cable for £10
Tries to see if the normal strap is comfortable enough, if not gets the £50 premium strap.
Right angled Short 3.5mm headphone connector £2

Price: £311-£361

The guy who is a bit too enthusiastic (and ends up spending the same as a G2 and not too far off an Index with B1.0s) gets:
Quest 256GB £399
Oculus Link cable £79
Oculus Case £50
AMVR controller trips £30
Oculus Link Battery premium strap £149
Battery pack for his Quest £50
Custom Oculus Quest audio solution £30-100

Price: £787-£850

And fast forward another 18 months and Oculus will release the Quest 3 and whichever setup you have built becomes redundant. Oculus have set a trend with their headsets. They are disposable. So I think its safe to say investing in modding the headset is not a smart move.

CV1 + Constellation trackers = Abandoned
Rift S = Abandoned
Oculus Go = Abandoned
Quest 1 = Will be Abandoned in 18 months and most new software won't run very well on it

Correct me if I mis-speak here sir, but would there be anything wrong with the 'smart man' buying a cheaper 3rd party 'elite' strap knock off instead? Oh yeah, and you're absolutely bang on the money about spending a needless amount on extra storage. If I do buy this, it would mostly be for PCVR gaming, so I find no need to care much about on-board storage, save for pre-loading games for the sake of socialising. And I think 64GB is more than enough to suit this requirement.

I keep banging on about this, but for me the deal breaker with the G2 over an Oculus headset or Index is there's no capacitive touch, so you can't make hand gestures, and there no feedback simply for moving your fingers around the buttons or touching the grip. That's a huge immersion breaker if you want to play social games or games where hand interactions are important - like Lone Echo or Echo Arena for example. Reviewers have reported that on the G2 their hands are stuck in thumbs up poses in games that support gestures.

Agreed.Capacitive touch is a great feature for pointing or thumb up gestures. I still remember playing the demo/intro for the Oculus quest and being wowed how natural and effective those gestures were using capacitive touch on the controllers.

Lack of support was the problem I had with the last Windows mixed reality headset i had. The hardware was decent for the time but software was either designed for Oculus or Vive and tweaking controls and settings to work on Windows mixed reality was a nightmare. It was so frustrating I actually gave up on PC VR and moved to used Playstation VR and Oculus quest as my platforms of choice!

Is there anything approaching a standard in Windows these days now that Microsoft mixed reality seems to be dead?' I'd be very wary about spending HP reverb money on a headset unless I was sure the support was going to be there. I presume everything on PC is still largely built around Oculus or Vive/Index?

Between the pricing, ecosystem and the level of support they're able to offer for their headsets Oculus seem to have the market to themselves at the moment.

Yes, and of course you can use the link cable you bought for your quest on the quest 2, probably also the quest 3.

Also, the oculus is the closest we have to a VR standard, and I've been burnt from straying away from the standard before. I'm a VR researcher and of the VR the papers submitted to place like CHI, 60% are oculus based, 30% index and 10% WMR. That tells me all I need to know about the future of VR.

The link cable for the Quest 2 is a special fibre optic for fast transfer rate hence the high cost. Would probably be best to wait for reviews on it before purchasing it.

As for the Elite strap with battery, I think if you are streaming 4K video then you need the extra battery capacity. My Go does not last very long on battery when streaming. I actually get on ok with the basic strap on the Go, only ordering the elite strap for the battery.

Well my orders are in for the Elite strap with battery, case and the link cable.

Just waiting on CEX to confirm the price on my Quest 1 (completed forms for this on Wednesday before the price dropped and handed in on Friday). They said it should all go through by Tuesday and they would contact me if any issues...

That will make it an easier choice of which version of the Quest 2 to order (but still leaning towards the 64Gb version).

Im waiting to see what straps 3rd parties come out with I think. Maybe some with integrated headphones?

Although the elite strap is getting very good reviews.

Also think the VR visible keyboard is a great idea for sim games, hopefuly there will be a VR visible mouse as well. I hope the keyboard is mechanical.

I went for the Elite Strap with battery, mainly because it will add a counterweight as well as extra battery life. The fact it also looks cool helps.

I'm sure third parties will produce clip-on headphones, or replacement straps with headphones. The only issue there is then it's likely the headset won't fit in the official case.

I actually find the Quest audio for general gameplay is good enough, and the spatial effect is incredible.

I agree on the audio but headphones are better for beat saber and watching movies.

Ive been trying to find a link for the keyboard with no luck so far.

My concern with the battery strap is comfort when reclining. I often lie down to watch a movie and the bulkier battery area of the strap may dig in to the back of your head.

True. The strap is easy to remove though. For lying down watching a movie I would just put the old strap back on for a while.

Are the clip on headphones just for convenience? I use a pair of over the ear Bose sound cancelling one's with my Go and it gives even more immersion.

Yes, clip on (or built in) headphones reduce friction, making it easier to jump into VR with decent sound whenever you like. Having to handle separate headphones and the wires just makes it more hassle to use VR.

Almost easy - you have to remove the faceplate to undo the top strap. Its a shame they didnt make this disconnect at the other end so the same top strap could be connected to both straps making it easier to switch them.

Someone good with a sewing machine could possibly make that mod.

Logitech are producing some closed back headphones with a really short cable but still they are separate.

I need a new set of headphones but ideally would want one with removable cable so i can fit either a short one or a long/coiled one to suit what im doing.

That smart man would be even smarter

the only issue with that is the wait for the third party strap.

I wish oculus had finally just put an audio solution onto their premium strap. Some cheap 15 quid koss headphones would have sufficed but they really want to push their crap audio


If it’s mostly for pcvr if saving for a g2 isn’t an option then the quest is good... well it’s the only option sadly

True

but in the same breath someone could say the deal breaker for the quest 2 is :

inferior visual fidelity
Compression based graphics
Poor dark scene performance
Worst pcvr latency
Worst audio out of the available headsets
Worst refresh rate until they upgrade it to 90
Worst comfort of any pcvr (very front heavy)


Etc etc

The two headsets really aren’t trading blows when it comes to pcvr. The quest is cheap and and thumb prescience. The g2 has better audio and visual fidelity with better immersion due to no latency.

for a pc enthusiast forum who buy expensive GPUs... surely we understand the value of plugging our displays into a gpu display port rather than a USB port otherwise why do we bother buying GPUs.. we should just stream our pc games over the internet using shadow or something.. that’s what oculus link is
