I'm looking to build my first gaming PC, and think this is largely a 1440p generation (given I play primarily FPS games). I also have a bog-standard 4K60 monitor that I can play story/driving games in. I think the next gen onwards will be safely 4K, and by then hopefully 144hz 4K monitors will be decent.
I would agree with this, there is no chance of demanding games hitting much if any above 60FPS at 4k with a high end GPU, look at RDR2. 1440p will give you those high frames in almost anything if you're looking at up to 100fps or over. Look at how that Bright Memory benchmark runs even at 1440p.

Anyone saying these cards are waste for 1440p is talking rubbish. I think 4K high refresh will be doable (if talking 100+fps for most games) either next gen or the one after. Plenty of time for monitor prices to come down & mature at the same time.

@morta

I'm 13th in queue for a 3080 aorus xtreme hope this gives you abit more clarity that you could be waiting ages as im within the top 20 orders and have had zero communication on when to expect it other than my queue position email. Now i dont mined waiting but some update on when they expect shipment or estimate a how many more weeks/months .. As i am considering other options when available if i dont have mine when the 20gb 3080 is up for preorder.

i just got an email from OC my que is now 136..so they only had 8 cards??

The jump to 1440p is still pretty decent for those not coming from a 2080 Ti. Agree people are definitely going a bit overboard on the down talking the comparison though. Unless you are in the fortunate position of having a 4K and 1440p high refresh monitor, committing to just 4K is a tall tall tall order, unless you only play esport games where 100+ fps is a piece of cake to achieve.

If they release a 3080 with 20gb of vram then whats the point of buying a 3090, what for an extra 4gb you pay 500+ pounds, err ok

And more cores unlocked. The 3080 20gb will be identical to the 3080 10gb so the 3090 will still be 5 to 20% faster (depending what game/app/review you have read)

But yeah I reckon it would make some people in the 3090 queue give up and buy the 3080 20gb.

Unless the 20GB is for the 3080 on TSMC's 7nm... Most likely released as 3080ti, with higher performance (clocks), lower TDP and heat output etc. Who knows at this point.

That I can see next spring. Can’t see it been put next month. That would just have to be the existing 3080 with extra memory

That would be April May 2021 though with the 21Gbs memory chips as well. It would destroy a 3090 and would make pefect sense.

If 20gb 3080s come out at end of this month then they will only be identical 3080s with extra memory.

None of these mythical 3080 variants mentioned in this thread make any sense financially for Nvidia. Why would they release a card that makes the 3090 less attractive? Where exactly in the tiny gap between the 3080 and the 3090 would they be shoehorning another 3080 in?

They have done it several times before and when needed the card they have slipped in outperforms the original more expensive card like when the cheaper 1080ti came out which was faster than the Titan.

Yeah, they'll hobble the 3090 as soon as it suits them. They've already got that money.

agreed,there's always another place for another card so long as nvidia will make money out of it,they'll shoehorn another card inbetween the 3080 and 3090 just as I'm sure they will with the 3070 and 3080 if it makes them cash they'll produce the cards

Aye, in between or even above. 7nm GA102 will make it easy.
