I mean, the internet was better when you needed a brain to be able to access it, certainly.

Though I do think some people are looking back with rose tinted goggles on.

Wireplay was good, but the phone bills to access the internet weren't. Nor were 'pay per minute' charges of AOL and the like.

I don't thing so, it was very very good, interesting, original, revolutionary. In the early 2000s the net was a completely fascinating place. No policing, totally free speech - 'free' music - access to information [and people] never before attained. It was awesome.

Well this forum certainly wasn't 'awesome' circa 2000, if you ask me.

I remember somebody leaking the mods private forum, with lovely threads such as "Why do [the racist name for pakistanis] smell?"

And that was from the owner (RIP)!

OCUK GD was very funny in the late 2000s. Lots of epic threads and lolz were had. Now it's different because a lot of things have been seen and done already, and many of the same people have been posting here for 10-20 years. But it was very amusing back then [apart from incidents like the one you mention].

Just look at 4chan as an example. In the 2000s it was a cesspit but with funny, original content. Now it's just a cesspit. People only go there out of habit now.

It wasn't all that long ago that sites were made to start using https :/

Before that it was trivial to hack some of them, including Facebook. They only started using encryption in 2013 I think. All you needed was wireshark to get someone's login details if they were on the same network as you. Uni and any public networks were a free for all.

People just didn't want to know about internet security (and still don't). But they would if they knew someone was actually messing around in their accounts. Hotel wifi often still has huge security holes. Sometimes you can connect straight in to their servers or routers, even other people's devices :p

You still can when you go to some back street cafes or bars or places like that with free hop on hop off wifi (not your chain places who use Cloud, etc) generally it's just a standard ISP supplied router still with the default user and pass set. One place I even managed to view their CCTV as that was still on default user and pass too which was easy to find out after a quick google.

I had to unwind a telephone extension cord as the family PC was the other end of the house to the phone socket. So many accidents

That coupled with taking up the land line, which rang CONSTANTLY for people gossiping with mum. She used to get very irate.

Barrysworld (Did this have sound boards for doing prank calls??), MSN Messenger, ICQ, Unreal tournament, limewire, bear share.

Ah the good old, slow, days

I used to spend way more time on OCUK forums than I do these days. I spent many countless hours catching up with them. I was active for quite a while 'pre-nuke'. My first foray into the online world would be with Compuserve or AOL dial-up. You'd spend forever waiting on the homepage loading!

I got into UT99 heavily and probably spent upwards of 5 hours a day playing it at a pretty high level. ICQ was good, and also Quakenet on IRC. Winamp was awesome. Back when it took 20 minutes to download a single song from Napster or Limewire.
Same here all of the above, UT99 competitively too, guessing you also spent a lot of time on Clanbase then like myself.

OcUK was great pre nuke, seemed to change after that, or maybe I did.

I worked for Sega in their European operations centre (Glasgow) for the Dreamcast launch. I used to have my email as [email protected] :D

Chu Chu Rocket, House of the dead etc. We all had a dreamcast console at our desks, with every game ever launched for it. When someone called up for help, usually with getting online, they could also ask about a game and we had beta discs that let you jump into any level. Good times. I basically got paid to play computer games.

Sorry but I was on the internet since AOL chat rooms and the internet is 100x better now, take off the rose tinted glasses. Waiting 20 minutes to download a 5mb MP3 vs instantly streaming 4k movies or playing virtual reality games online, programs like discord that allow live streaming of your games to friends, Twitch, Netflix, Amazon, etc. We all have fond memories of the internet being new and exciting but there were a lot of down sides.
