I’m on the fence right now. The longer the stock shortage continues, the more I read and watch benchmarks that keep highlighting to me - I think - the 1080 ti for 1440 gaming is still a contender.
I missed the initial 3000 series bandwagon and at first I was scrabbling at every second to check stock and secure a card but as time has gone on without a shiny new GPU, I might be realising I didn’t need it in the first place.
I’m not dismissing the 3000 series but for now I’ve discovered the following...
(Hit me with some knowledge if I’m getting this wrong)
The 3070 is on par to a 2080 ti. (Excluding Raytracing and DLSS 2.0 for a moment) The price of a 2080 ti is ridiculous so the 3070 is the no brainier choice here. However, the performance gain between the 1080ti and the 2080ti (same as a 3070) is not earth shattering. Watching various bench videos, the 1080ti can still keep up with minimum 60fps on max settings and 1440 on pretty much all latest games. There are some very occasional dips here and there depending on the game.
Then there is the 3080. Granted, it is a far stronger card than the 1080ti/2080ti and 3070 obviously but with the prices hiking probably every day and into next year, unless the pricing settles down, could it go the same way as the 2080ti? - ie, ridiculous prices?
It goes without saying the 3090 is beefier but so is the pricing.
I think what I’m trying to weigh up is, with my current setup - i7 10700k and a 1080ti - do I need a 3000 series right now for gaming at 1440 for games releasing next year and beyond? Provided I can sustain minimum 60fps and forego raytracing and DLSS 2.0.
Honestly right now, the next game on my horizon that has a huge question mark over it is Cyberpunk 2077. Can I maintain 60fps, with max detail and 1440? I know the one game I can’t do that right is RDR2 but I’ve always found Rockstar games the most demanding when you simply want to max the visuals without having to tweak settings to get a decent frame rate.
Thoughts?
